Gymnastics Takes Second At Flip For A Cure Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team finished second in a quad meet with Illinois State, Iowa and No. 18 West Virginia in the second meet of the 2009 season. The meet was the third annual Jan Howard Breast Cancer Awareness meet and raised over $1,200 for the American Cancer Society. The Spartans posted a score of 194.200 and recorded a season-high six top three finishes. Iowa won the meet with an overall score of 194.350, while West Virginia finished with a 193.700 and Illinois State placed fourth with a team score of 190.700. MSU improved to 12-0 all-time against Illinois State.
The Spartans started on vault with senior Katlyn Roggensack (Wheaton, Ill.) recording a top score of 9.825, earning top honors for the first time in her career. The score was also a career-high. Sophomore Kelsey Morley (Elkhart, Ind.) and junior Rochelle Robinson (Chesapeake, Va.) posted 9.775, finishing fourth overall. As a team, MSU finished second on vault after totaling 48.775. Iowa took first with a score of 48.825, while West Virginia was third (48.650) and Illinois State posted 48.175.
MSU placed second with bars with a team score of 48.725, just behind West Virginia with a 48.775. Iowa was third with a team score of 48.175 and Illinois State tallied 45.775. Junior Nicole Curler (Bay City, Mich.) led the way for the Spartans with a 9.800. Sophomore Nicole Argiros (Livonia, Mich.) and senior Dani Fanning (Glendale, Ariz.) posted 9.775 on the apparatus, finishing fourth overall.
Morley and Curler led MSU on balance beam with both recording 9.850 and finishing first overall, while Roggensack tallied 9.750 for fifth overall. The Hawkeyes took first on beam (48.625) while the Spartans finished second (48.725). Illinois State was third after recording a 48.075 and West Virginia posted a score of 47.650.
The meet concluded with MSU posting a 48.575 on floor exercise for fourth in the event. Iowa recorded a 48.725, Illinois State posted a 48.675 and West Virginia finished with a score of 48.625. Fanning and Argiros led the way for Michigan State, posting 9.775 for third overall on the event. Both also tied their career-highs on floor exercise.
Curler and Lopatofsky participated in the all-around for Michigan State, with Curler finishing sixth with a 38.225 and Lopatofsky was seventh after recording a 37.925. Iowa's Jenifer Simbhudas finished first in the event, while teammate Houry Gebeshian placed second. West Virginia's Megan Morris took third in the event.
The meet was recorded by the Big Ten Network and will air on Friday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m.
Michigan State travels to University Park, Pa. on Jan. 24 for a dual meet with Penn State, beginning at 7 p.m.
