EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team held its annual Green and White meet today, Dec. 12, in Jenison Field House. The event allowed fans to see the routines the team will perform for the upcoming 2010 season before its first meet on Jan. 8, 2010. Senior Nicole Curler (Bay City, Mich.) led the Spartans with her 38.975 all-around score.
"The team did an outstanding job today," said head coach Kathie Klages. "We are really excited about their performance. We set a goal to start where we finished last year, hitting 21 our of 24 routines last year at NCAA Regionals, and today we hit 22 out of 24. So, we feel like we are right on track to do that. The next month is going to be very important, with the girls going home for break. It is crucial for them to stay focused, conditioned and to get into their hometown gym if at all possible."
Starting off the event today, on the vault, was senior Rochelle Robinson (Chesapeake, Va.) with her score of 9.850. She was followed closely by junior Nicole Argiros (Livonia, Mich.) and freshman Shanthi Teike (Columbus, Ind.) who each posted a scores of 9.825 on the event.
Curler and Robinson led the team on the uneven bars, each posting a score of 9.775. Sophomore Daneen Haba (Germantown, Tenn.) followed with her score of 9.650.
Curler continued her success as the team moved over to the balance beam, tallying a score of 9.850. Robinson and junior Kelsey Morley (Elkhart, Ind.) followed as each posted a score of 9.775.
Junior Kathryn Mahoney (Western Springs, Ill.) closed out the evening with her team-high score of 9.825 on the floor. Teike recorded the second highest score of 9.775, while Argiros rounded out the top three, posting a score of 9.750.
In the end, the Green team downed the White team by a score of 116.300 to 115.425. The score was tabulated by taking the top three scores for each team on each event.
MSU would have tallied a combined team score of 194.125, had the top-five scores for each event been tabulated.
The Spartans will participate in their first regular season meet with Penn State, West Virginia and Western Michigan on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at 6 p.m. in Jenison.
