ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 19 Michigan State gymnastics team (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) remained on the road when it traveled to No. 15 Michigan on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The Spartans, looking to continue their best to a season since 1998, came out strong, but fell just short to the Wolverines, 194.200 to 193.750. This marked the first lost on the season for the Green and White, while UM is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten action. Leading MSU in the all-around was senior Nicole Curler (Bay City, Mich.) who finished second for the third consecutive meet with a score of 38.925.
"Tonight I think we kept very good focus on hitting routines," said head coach Kathie Klages. " The girls didn't do as good of job on some of the more detail aspects, such as steps on landings and steps out of bounds, as we would have liked. But, tonight it was great to see Nicole step up for us and to see Shanthi battle back from an injury suffered earlier this week in practice. As a team, it was nice to have Emily back in the floor lineup since rupturing her achilles a year ago at regionals. But, I think being away from East Lansing is helping the girls build confidence with each road competition and they are definitely learning how to perform while tired."
Senior Rochelle Robinson (Chesapeake, Va.) led the way on the vault with her second-place overall finish with a score of 9.850. Freshman Shanthi Teike (Columbus, Ind.) narrowly missed podium honors with her fourth-place finish with a mark of 9.825. Michigan's Natalie Beilstein to home individual honors on the vault with her score of 9.875. Kylee Botterman from UM tied Robinson in second with her 9.850 tally. The Wolverines topped MSU as a team on vault by a score of 49.075 to 48.850.
On the uneven bars, the team's opening event of the meet, Robinson and Teike led the way with their team-leading bars scores of 9.675 each. Michigan swept podium honors with Sarah Curtis finishing first with a score of 9.825, while Maureen Moody followed in second with a mark of 9.775. Brittnee Martinez and Jordan Sexton, each of Michigan, rounded out the top-three with tallies of 9.725. The Wolverines edged the Spartans as a team on the beam by a score of 48.675 to 48.100, which is MSU's top team performance of the season on the event.
Curler continued her dominance for the team on the beam as she recorded a score of 9.825, which was tied for third with junior Kelsey Morley (Elkhart, Ind.). Curtis of UM led all with her score of 9.875. Kelsey Knutson of Michigan was second overall with her mark of 9.850, while Botterman joined Curler and Morley in third. The Spartans topped the Wolverines in the event by a score of 48.400 to 47.650.
