FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Kyron Foster of the Michigan State track & field team capped out a stellar indoor triple jump season at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, March 13. Foster finished sixth with a school record jump of 16.21m. As a result of Foster's finish, he becomes the first Spartan in school history to receive All-America honors as a triple jumper, and the 50th indoor All-American all-time at MSU.
"It is really great to see Kyron cap off a stellar indoor season," said jumps and multi-events coach Chris Bostwick. "He worked hard all season and for him to pull out his best jump of the season at the NCAA Indoor Championships is just a testament to all of his hard work. I was extremely happy to see him achieve All-America status, as one of the top-eight finishers from the United States. He really peaked at the right time and this is exactly what we had been shooting for this indoor season."
As the lone Big Ten representative in the triple jump event, Foster began the event with a leap of 15.52m for his first jump. The Spartan senior then posted his record-break jump of 16.21m for his second jump, a jump good enough to place him in the finals later in the evening. Foster broke his previous school record by 0.15m. Christian Taylor of Florida finished first with a leap of 17.18m
"I am really pleased with my effort today," said Foster. "To achieve All-America honors is something that I am extremely pleased about and have been striving for all season. To peak in the last event of the indoor season proves that coach had the right game plan from the beginning of the season. Now, I have to start getting ready for the outdoor season as it is just around the corner."
All season Foster had continuously been in the top-10 in the nation in the triple jump. In the first event of the season, the Kentucky Invitational, Foster broke the then school record of 15.9m, set by Jonathon Allen in 2007. The mark of 16.06m led the nation for several weeks and helped earn him Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 18.
The Spartans will open the outdoor season on March 27 with the MSU Throws Challenge. The field athletes will begin the 2010 outdoor season the following weekend (April 3) with the Spartan Invitational.
