Gymnastics Ties for Fourth at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State gymnastics team (14-8-1, 5-5-1 Big Ten) traveled to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, March 27, for the Big Ten Championships hosted by Ohio State. Freshman Shanthi Teike and senior Rochelle Robinson placed third on the vault and bars, respectively.
The Spartans finished tied with Minnesota for fourth place with a score of 195.350. Michigan placed first with a score of 196.600, while Penn State finished second with a 196.525. Iowa was third with a 195.575 mark. Illinois was sixth (195.025), while Ohio State was seventh (194.700).
MSU opened the competition on the beam with an event score of 48.675. Leading the Green and White individually was Robinson with a score of 9.775. Hourly Gebeshian of Iowa finished first on the event with a score of 9.995. Placing second was Sharaya Musser (Penn State), Kristin Furukawa (Minnesota), Sarah Curtis (Michigan), Katie Zurales (Michigan), Kylee Botterman (Michigan) and Kelsey Knutson (Michigan) all with a 9.900 mark. The Wolverines placed first as a team (49.450), while Iowa was second (49.200) and Illinois was third (49.100).
After a bye, the Spartans then proceeded to the floor where they posted a mark of 49.025 as a team. Michigan State was led by seniors Nicole Curler and Emily Lopatofsky who each posted a 9.850. Brandi Personett of Penn State led all gymnasts on the event with a score of 9.950. Sarah Curtis, Natalie Beilstein and Kylee Botterman, all of Michigan, as well as Sharaya Musser of Penn State, tied for second with a 9.900. Penn State finished first (49.300) with Michigan second (49.200). MSU placed third on the floor.
Michigan State proceeded to the vault after another bye. Teike led MSU on the event with a score of 9.850, a mark that tied her personal-best score. Natalie Beilstein of Michigan finished first with a score of 9.900. Sarah Curtis of Michigan placed second (9.875), while Teike tied for third with Kylee Botterman (Michigan), Melissa Fernandez (Illinois), Allison Buckley (Illinois) and Brandi Personett (Penn State). Michigan again led with a score of 49.125. Illinois was second (48.925), while Penn State was third (48.850).
Robinson led MSU on the bars in the next rotation with a score of 9.875. Natalie Ettl (9.925) and Sharaya Musser (9.900) of Penn State were first and second, respectively. Robinson tied for third along with Brandi Personett (Penn State). Penn State finished first (49.350) with Michigan in second (49.125) and Iowa in third (48.975).
Nicole Curler was the top all-arounder for MSU with a score of 39.175. Brandi Personett (39.550) and Sharaya Musser (39.500) of Penn State finished first and third, respectively. Sarah Curtis of Michigan was second with a 39.525 mark.
The Spartans wait until Monday (March 29) to see where they will travel to for the NCAA Regionals on April 10. Institutions hosting regionals include the University of Kentucky (Lexington, Ky.), the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, Utah), Penn State University (University Park, Pa.), the University of Missouri (Columbia, Mo.), West Virginia University (Morgantown, W. Va.) and UCLA (Los Angeles, Calif.).
