East Lansing - Freshman winger Brent Darnell (Canton, Mich.) has been named the CCHA Rookie of the Week after a four-point performance in the Spartans' sweep of Bowling Green. Darnell is the fifth different Spartan to earn weekly honors this year, but is the first freshman to secure the award this season.
Darnell had a goal and three assists (+3) for the Spartans as they swept the Falcons, their third series sweep of the season and second of a CCHA opponent. Darnell had multiple-point outings both nights, setting up Dean Chelios' game-winning tallies each night, and also garnering a goal of his own on Friday. They were his first two career multiple-point games.
The Spartans, who have gone 8-1-1 over their last 10 games since a 2-4-0 start to the season, moved up to No. 14 in the USCHO.com poll this week. The Spartans are unbeaten in their last four games, and have a home-and-home series with Michigan this Friday and Saturday.
In previous weeks, centerman Lee Reimer (Landmark, Man.) has been the league's Offensive Player of the Week, Brock Shelgren (Chicago, Ill.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich.) and Drew Palmisano (Ann Arbor, Mich.) have both had turns as the CCHA Goaltender of the Week.
