East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State's hockey program has just one home game remaining prior to a 17-day hiatus for exams and the holiday break, but there's no better game to take in - a showdown with archrival Michigan on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Munn Ice Arena.
The Spartans, No. 14 in both national polls this week, has gone 8-1-1 over its last 10 games and looks to gain ground in the CCHA race when it plays a home-and-home series this weekend against the Wolverines. Michigan, which stands at 8-8-2 on the season, hosts Friday's game at Yost, and the Spartans host the series finale at 6:30 on Saturday.
The hockey program will honor the 1986 NCAA Championship team on its 25th anniversary of winning the national title. Michigan State captured the 1986 championship with a 6-5 victory over Harvard. Mike Donnelly scored his second of the game and 59th goal that season at 17:09 of the final period to provide MSU its second National Championship in program history. Donnelly's 59 goals remains the NCAA record for goals in a season.
In addition to honoring the 1986 National Champions, there will be a return of Chuck-a-Puck at Saturday's game, with all proceeds going to the hockey program's Shoot for a Cure initiative. Shoot for a Cure was started by former Spartan Justin Abdelkader in January of 2008, and since its inception, Shoot for a Cure has raised more than $40,000 in the fight against children's cancer.
Tickets are still available for purchase online 24 hours a day at MSUSpartans.com or by calling 355-1610.
