
Gymnastics Falls at Western Michigan, 194.625-191.825

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team renewed its in-state rivalry with Western Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 6, falling 194.625-191.825 to the Broncos at University Arena. Pacing all gymnasts in the all-around was sophomore Shanthi Teike with a winning 38.050 score.
Junior Daneen Haba and senior Nicole Argiros led the Spartans in the vault with tie for second. They both recorded scores of 9.750. Winning the event with a score of 9.775 was Caitlin Sullivan of WMU. As a team, MSU topped the Broncos on the vault by a score of 48.550 to 48.400.
On the uneven bars, juniors Jackie Berg and Selina Rodriguez were the top gymnasts for the Green and White, posting identical scores of 9.700. Western Michigan, however, swept the top-three positions on the podium. Leading the way in a tie for first were Caroline O'Brien and Brynn Wienckowski with scores of 9.825. Kristine Garbarino rounded the out top three finishers with a 9.775 mark. WMU posted a score of 48.925 compared to the Spartans' 46.850 on the event.
Berg once again led MSU on an apparatus as she was third overall on the balance beam with a 9.750 score. Sullivan captured her second individual crown of the day as she won the beam with a score of 9.800. O'Brien followed in second with her 9.775 mark. Western Michigan defeated the Green and White on the event, 48.475-47.975.
Argiros was the top Spartan on the floor exercise with a score of 9.750. Sullivan earned her third win of the day with a score of 9.850. Western Michigan's Meghan Donovan followed in second (9.800) and Garbarino in third (9.775) rounded out the top three on the floor. The Broncos were victorious on the event, 48.825-48.450.
Teike was the lone all-arounder for both the Spartans and WMU.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend for their second of three-straight road meets when they travel to Durham, N.H., for a quad meet. MSU will face host New Hampshire, Alaska-Anchorage and Brown with the meet beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12.
