
Spartans Cap Busy Weekend At Drake Relays

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team concluded its busy weekend today (April 30) with members of its team at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and at the Lyle Bennett Open in Mount Pleasant, Mich. On the day at both competitions, the Spartans recorded 40 top-5 finishes as a team.
Placing sixth in the triple jump at the Drake Relays was Ashley Stacey with a leap of 12.48m.
Leslie Aririguzo finished seventh in the finals of the 100m hurdles, clocking in at 13.51.
In the men's high jump, Kevin Jackson recorded a leap of 2.10m in the event.
In Mount Pleasant, Robyn Whalen placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.89m. Catherine Daniels joined Whalen in fifth with a 46.92m mark.
Jay Gillespie also competed in the hammer throw at CMU, placing fourth overall with a toss of 58.43m.
In the women's discus, Kelsey Prena was second in the event as she posted a distance of 41.89m. Whalen joined Prena in the competition, placing fourth overall with a toss of 41.05m.
In the high jump, Jessica Scherting was second with a leap of 1.66m.
MSU saw three females place in the top-5 in the women's long jump at Central Michigan. Leading the trio of Spartans was Marva Goodson in second. Goodson posted a leap of 5.65m, just ahead of Katie Guikema in third who posted a 5.60m mark. Chanel Payne rounded out the top-5 with a fifth-place leap of 5.30m.
Isaac Marshall turned in the top mark overall in the men's long jump as he posted a winning leap of 6.94m.
Theresa O'Leary was the top Spartan in the women's javelin with a throw of 31.60m, good enough for second place.
Leading the sweep of for the Green and White in the women's shot put was Shatora Lewis. Lewis led in first with a 14.10m, just ahead of Daniels in second (13.45m) and Prena in third (12.59m).
Aaron Ide turned in a second-place mark in the men's shot put, recording a distance of 16.18m in the event.
Tiffany Evans and Joe Dimambro gave MSU a sweep of both the women's and men's 3,000m steeplechase. Evans was joined by Meggan Freeland (11:30.60 - third), Liana Eckert (11:39.44 - fourth) and Allie Hock (11:44.87 - fifth) in the event. Evans clocked in at 10:57.73 while Dimambro turned in a time of 9:48.79.
Veronica Wilson finished second in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:44.42. Kevin Yarnell was also second in the men's event, finishing in 3:58.14. Yarnell was joined by Shaka Dukes in fourth with his 4:05.19 time.
Placing fourth in the 100m dash was Chelsea Ross with her time of 13.26. Durant Crum also clocked in a fourth-place mark as he finished in 11.29.
Finishing third and fourth in the 800m run was Rachel McFarlane and Elizabeth Watson, respectively. McFarlane clocked at 2:18.13 while Watson finished just behind with a 2:18.51 mark.
Joe Banyai was the top Spartan in the 800m run as he clocked in a 1:56.84 for second overall. Banyai topped Stephen Walker in third as he turned in a time of 1:58.78 in the event.
In only her second race as a Spartan, Katherine Jamieson finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.32.
Alysson Bodenbach finished second overall in the 200m dash as she clocked in a 25.79m. Williams joined Bodenbach as she placed fourth with a time of 26.08.
Crum clocked his second fourth-place finish as he turned in a time of 22.21 in the 200m dash.
Kristen Smith led a series of five female runners from MSU in the 3000m run. Smith placed first (10:04.00) ahead of Emily Langenberg (10:10.62 - second), Megan Rodgers (10:13.41 - third), Klare Essad (10:21.73 - fourth) and Olivia Sydow (10:22.81 - fifth).
Brett Burdick gave the Spartans a sweep of the 3000m run as she led all runners with a time of 9:04.82.
In the 4x400m relay, the team of Bodenbach, Pryor, Williams and Jamieson turned in the fastest time in the event as they finished in 3:48.94.
