EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey team concluded its opening weekend of official practice with the annual Green and White intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.
"We've only had two practices and really have just been able to see guys in conditioning-type settings up until today. So, it was good to see them in a game-like condition," said MSU head coach Tom Anastos. "We saw a few good things, but obviously a significant amount of things that need work as we prepare to start our season."
Team White won the game, 1-0, on a shootout goal by sophomore JT Stenglein.
For the second straight year, both teams featured media members as guest coaches. Hondo Carpenter (SpartanNation.com), Graham Couch (Lansing State Journal), Matt Charboneau (The Detroit News) and Audrey Dahlgren (WLNS-TV 6) coached Team White, while Fred Heumann (WLNS-TV 6), Neil Koepke (MSUSpartans.com) and Alyssa Girardi (MiHockey) led Team Green.
Both teams had scoring chances in overtime, the best of which came when Team Green's Joe Cox picked up a loose puck at the blue line and raced in on a breakaway. But Team White goaltender Zack Cisek turned Cox away, keeping it a scoreless game.
Matt DeBlouw gave Team White its best chance in the extra session, but Green goaltender Nate Phillips got a pad on DeBlouw's backhand.
Jake Hildebrand started for the Green team and made five saves in one period of action, while Team White starter Ed Minney made 10 saves in the first stanza.
Team Green finished with a 20-17 edge in shots on goal.
Michigan State will host the University of Windsor in an exhibition game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Munn Ice Arena.
