IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to top-ranked Iowa, 37-0, Saturday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes (5-0), who featured seven top-10 wrestlers in their lineup Saturday night, began the dual with a major decision by No. 4 Thomas Gilman over Mitch Rogaliner at 125 pounds, 18-6. Hermilo Esquivel battled fourth-ranked Cory Clark at 133 pounds, but ultimately fell, 5-0.
At 141, Garth Yenter recorded the first takedown against Topher Carton, but Carton scored two reversals in the first two periods and eventually came out with a 6-3 victory.
In the 157-pound match, Roger Wildmo lost a hard-fought decision to Edwin Coooper, 6-5. Wildmo's second period takedown trimmed Cooper's lead to 5-4 with 1:12 remaining; however, Cooper escaped later in the second to make it 6-4. Wildmo managed an escape to start the third, but couldn't overcome the deficit and fell in the one-point decision.
After a scoreless first period, Ryan Watts escaped in the second and took a 1-0 lead over fifth-ranked Nick Moore at 165 pounds. Moore battled back to get a takedown, but Watts remained in the match with a takedown of his own with 1:30 left in the third to tie it at 3. Moore escaped just six seconds later to go back up, 4-3, and tacked on a riding-time point to make the final, 5-3.
The Spartans gave up bonus points at 174 and 184 pounds. At 197, Nick McDiarmid got things started with a takedown in the first period and added another takedown with 40 seconds left in the second, but he quickly allowed a reversal and Meyer tied it at 4 heading into the final period. Although McDiarmid escaped to take a 5-4 lead, Meyer notched a takedown with 45 seconds remaining and held on for the 6-5 win.
No. 3 Bobby Telford closed the dual with a major decision over Luke Jones at heavyweight.
