EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" Michigan State field hockey senior Heather Howie has been named First-Team All-Big Ten, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Howie, who has tallied four goals and five assists this season, is tied for second among the Spartans in 2015. This is the first Big Ten recognition for the midfielder who has started in 73 games throughout her Spartan career and was named a Big Ten Player to Watch prior to this season.
"This is a well-deserved accolade to cap off Heather's career at Michigan State," said head coach Helen Knull. "She has fought back from injury and has been a leader for us on and off the field. She has proven herself to be one of the best in the conference, and I am pleased that she is being recognized with this honor."
She has recently been selected to the Scottish Senior Squad, as announced by Scottish Hockey. Howie, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, competed on Scotland's U21 team last summer, and will join her sister, Allison, on the Senior Squad upon graduation from MSU in December.
"Heather embodies what it means to not only a Spartan, but also a Big Ten athlete," said Knull. "She has set the standard high for Spartans to follow."
Senior Mallory Tyler has been recognized by the Big Ten as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. Tyler has also tallied four goals and five assists in 2015.
"Mallory has always been a role model both on and off the field," said Knull. "She understands what it takes to be competitive on the field and in the classroom, while always showing respect to her coaches, teammates, opponents and professors. She brings a sense of responsibility and pride to everything she does in life. It has been an honor to coach her these past four years, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for her."
The eighth-seeded Spartans will face top-seeded and nationally ranked Maryland in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 12:30 p.m. ET. The game will be held in Bloomington, Ind. at the IU Field Hockey Complex and will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
