EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State wrestling team recorded two falls, but No. 20 Purdue came away with a 27-15 victory over the Spartans on Friday night in the inaugural Tumbles and Takedowns event at Jenison Field House. The women's gymnastics team competed against Iowa at the same time as the wrestling dual before a crowd of 1,046 fans.
"It was really nice to do something with gymnastics," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "I think a lot of people got exposed to both sports. I know our team enjoyed it and I hope gymnastics did as well.
"Up and down, our kids wrestled hard. I know that the effort was there, the attention was there, and we'll keep working on it, and hopefully we can make some progress."
For the second consecutive dual, the Spartans won two of the first three matches to open up a 9-3 lead. Mitch Rogaliner got things started for MSU with a 7-5 decision over Ben Thornton at 125 pounds, and Javier Gasca pinned Danny Sabatello in the second period at the 5:51 mark as the Spartans took a six-point advantage.
Gasca was in control the entire match, recording an early takedown in the first and then notching a reversal midway through the second before collecting his second fall of the season. He improved to 3-1 in dual meets and 13-4 overall.
Purdue (6-2, 1-1 Big Ten) claimed the next five matches to dig out of its 9-3 deficit and build a 24-9 lead. At 165 pounds, Dean Vettese battled against fifth-ranked Chad Welch through two periods and was tied at 3 heading into the third, but Welch tallied two takedowns, near-fall points and riding time to win by major decision, 13-4.
At 197 pounds, Jacob Cooper came out strong against Drake Stein with an early takedown and quickly added back points before registering his first collegiate fall in 1:54.
Purdue heavyweight Tyler Krawl recorded a 6-0 decision over Dimitrus Renfroe to end the dual, giving the Boilermakers the 27-15 victory.
"Our kids have bought in to the fact that we have to get more aggressive and we do have to wrestle harder," said Minkel. "We've got a lot of young kids who you want to grow up in a couple of weeks, but that's harder than you like sometimes. But they're making progress. We just have to keep chipping away."
Michigan State (0-9, 0-4 Big Ten) returns to action Sunday to face No. 13 Illinois at 1 p.m. in Jenison Field House. The dual will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
