Michigan State continues a five-game winning streak against Indiana. MSU has won 11 of the last 14. Tom Izzo improves to 23-13 vs. the Hoosiers including 17-1 at home.
Senior guard Denzel Valentine recorded his second-career 30-point outing, tying a career-best 11 field goals and netting 5-of-8 from distance. Valentine provided a career-high 13 helpers, racking up nearly half of MSU's 27 assists. This is the 10th time this season Valentine has led MSU in points and assists.
Sunday marks Valentine's fourth 25 point, 10 assist and five rebound game of the year - the most in the nation since 2010-11. This marks Valentine's 10th 20+ point effort on the season and fourth-straight.
Michigan State is 15-10 all-time on Valentine's Day, including 13-4 at home, winning its fourth-straight home game on Feb. 14. Denzel Valentine shines on the holiday he shares a name with, as he scored 17 points last season on Feb. 14, including the game-winning 3-pointer as MSU beat No. 23 Ohio State, 59-56.
Senior forward Matt Costello netted a career-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, good for his seventh double-double of the season and 10th of his career. Costello hit a career-best 10 field goals, including one from distance. The trey was Costello's second of both this season and his career, matching one at Purdue on Feb. 9. The Spartans are 6-1 when Costello posts a double-double this season.
Costello tied his season-best three blocks and secures sole possession of third-place all-time among Spartan shot blockers with 137. He needs just five more to tie Branden Dawson for the school record. Sophomore forward Marvin Clark played a season-high 22 minutes, shooting 2-of-3 from the field for four points. Clark grabbed four rebounds and recorded one block, one steal and one assist.
After being down 10 points in the first half at 33-23 with 7:58 left, Michigan State overcame a double-digit deficit and rallied to win for the fourth time this season. MSU trailed Oakland by 15 in the first half and 13 at the half, and also trailed Kansas and Louisville by 13 points in the opening stanza.
MSU outscored IU, 47-29, in the second half, shooting 19-of-30 (.633) from the field and 5-of-10 (.500) from behind the arc.
Despite IU's 16-7 edge on the offensive glass, MSU recorded 15 second-chance points alongside the Hoosier's five.
The Spartans combined for 10 blocks, marking the third time this season MSU has recorded 10 or more blocks. Freshman forward Deyonta Davis led the team with four swats, increasing his MSU freshman record to 52 on the season.
