Michigan State Game Notes - Feb. 18
No. 8 Michigan State extends the all-time series with Wisconsin to 76-64 in favor of the Spartans, including a 47-14 advantage when the game is played in East Lansing, winning the last nine in a row at Breslin Center as it was the Badgers' first visit to East Lansing since 2013 as the previous five meetings were either in Madison or the Big Ten Tournament. With Thursday's MSU win, the home team has won 18 of the last 20 meetings on a campus site in the series.
The Spartans snapped the Badgers' seven-game winning streak which was the nation's longest among major conference teams.
MSU has won six of its last seven contests, moving to 22-5 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten.
Senior guard Denzel Valentine recorded his third-straight double-double and the eighth of the season with 24 points and 10 assists. All three double-doubles included 20+ points and 10+ assists. He dished out half of the team's 20 assists, providing a helper on 10 of 26 made field goals. He has scored 20 or more points 11 times this season, including five-straight games.
The last Spartan to post a double-double in three consecutive games was Adreian Payne in the 2013 season. (Last two games of 2012-13; season opener of 2013-14).
The Spartans scored 69 points, tying for a season-low points scored in a Big Ten Game. The low was originally set in a 69-61 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 2.
For the fifth time this season, including the second time in B1G play, the Spartans never trailed in the contest. The largest lead came with 6:45 left in the second half as the Spartans pulled away by 22 points.
Freshman forward Deyonta Davis led the team with three swats, increasing his MSU freshman record to 55 on the season.
Junior forward Gavin Schilling played a season-high 20 minutes for the Spartans, shooting 2-of-3 from the field and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe for six points. Schilling grabbed five rebounds, including three on the offensive glass, and marked a career-best three steals in the contest.
Senior guard Bryn Forbes shot 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from distance, scoring 17 points and sinking half of the Spartans' eight made 3s. Forbes has scored in double figures 20 times this season. MSU is 19-1 when Forbes reaches a double-digit scoring mark. After making just one 3-pointer in each of the last two games, Forbes' four treys marks his ninth game with four or more trifectas.
Valentine, Forbes, Harris, Davis and Costello made up the starting lineup for the eighth-straight game, posting a 6-2 record in those contests.
