East Lansing, Mich - Michigan State senior Lisa Burt (Port Orange, Fla.) and junior Elena Lagoski (Kingston, Pa.) were among the 29 student-athletes to earn Big Ten honors, as announced by the Conference office on Monday, March 14. Both Spartans earned Second Team honors.
Burt has been MSU's top scorer in her senior season, and owns an all-around regional qualifying score (RQS) of 39.375, which ranks fifth in the Central region and 12th in the Big Ten. On bars, she is tied for 10th in the central region and eighth in the Big Ten with a 9.865, which includes matching her career-best of 9.925 on bars on Feb. 28 at Illinois State, which is tied for the fifth-best score in program history. She has won bars in four of MSU's meets this season and finished in the top three eight times, and has 24 top-three finishes on bars in her career (nine first-place finishes).
On beam, Burt leads the Spartans with a 9.825 RQS, which is 22nd in the region and 25th in the Conference. In addition to owning MSU's top RQS score in all-around, beam, and bars, she shares the top RQS on the team on vault with Lagoski, as each owns a 9.775, tied for 31st in the Big Ten and 35th in the Central Region. Burt has a pair of third-place finishes on vault this season, while Lagoski has finished second and third once each.
Lagoski owns MSU's top floor RQS, a 9.890, which is tied for sixth in the region and seventh among Big Ten gymnasts. The junior owns seven first-place finishes on floor this season and has 17 floor wins in her career. On March 4 at Cal, she recorded a 9.95 to match career-high of 9.950, which is the fifth-best floor score in program history. This was the fourth time in her career that she tied her career best, and overall owns four of the top 14 floor scores in the Spartan record book.
"I am so proud of Lisa and Elena for their contributions to our team this season," noted Klages of her two-time All-Big Ten selections. "Lisa is such a consistent competitor and has done All-Around for us in every meet this season. Elena has added bars to her repertoire this season and is a standout in every meet on floor exercise. We're thrilled that they were recognized for the contributions that they make to our team."
Both athletes earned All-Big Ten honors for the second time in their careers. Burt and Lagoski were both First Team All-Big Ten honorees in 2015.
Michigan State finished second at last week's Big Five meet at Ohio State, and as a result will compete in the evening session at the Big Ten Championships this Saturday at Nebraska. The Big Ten Championship site, with schedules and broadcast information, can be accessed here.
