East Lansing, Mich. - The No. 26 Michigan State gymnastics team fell to No. 24 Iowa, 195-475-193.875, in the first Big Ten meet of the season. Hailee Westney won the bars competition, tying her career high with a score of 9.900, while Kira Frederick won the floor competition with a 9.875. Nicola Deans and Iowa's Charlotte Sullivan tied in the All-Around with scores of 39.050, marking the first All-Around title for the senior.
"Hailee's bar routine was stunning and a well-deserved score," said head coach Kathie Klages. "It was awesome to see Nicola put four events together tonight. We had three good events and one disastrous one. We will be able to fix that this week in the gym and hopefully be ready to roll on Friday."
MSU started on bars where it finished with its best event score of the evening at 48.875. Kira Frederick led off with 9.725 and the Spartans closed out the event strong, with Deans scoring a 9.775 followed by a 9.850 from Lindsey Lemke before Westney closed it out with her career-high performance of a 9.900.
From there the Spartans moved to the vault where they compiled a team score of 48.450, led by Nicola Deans' 9.825.
On the floor competition, Frederick scored a meet-high 9.875, while Deans and Holly Ryan each scored 9.750. MSU closed out on the beam with a score of 48.750. Frederick and Westney registered the Spartans high score with a 9.800.
The Spartans return home next weekend where they will host Minnesota as part of the Tumbles and Takedowns event at Jenison Field House, paired with the MSU wrestlers who will take on Central Michigan.
