Michigan State vs. Penn State Postgame Notes -- Big Ten Tournament Round 2 -- March 9, 2017 -- Washington, D.C.
With Thursday's second-round victory, MSU is now 28-14 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament.
MSU's 27-point margin of victory was tied for its highest in a Big Ten Tournament game, along with last year's 27-point win over Ohio State in the quarterfinals.
Michigan State totaled 44 rebounds, a Big Ten Tournament-best by MSU, topping the previous record of 42 that happened in its first ever Tournament game vs. Minnesota (3/6/98). The Spartans set another program record in the Big Ten Tournament by knocking down 10 3-pointers.
Leading 18-13, MSU went on a 10-0 run to make it 28-13, forcing Penn State to call a timeout with 8:16 to play in the half. MSU then pushed that same run to 14-2, making six straight field goals during the stretch.
After Penn State cut Michigan State's lead to single digits at 36-27, the Spartans closed the half on a 9-0 run over the final 2:45, capped off by Miles Bridges' third dunk of the opening frame.
Michigan State held Penn State to 29.1% (16-55) shooting from the field, a season-low by an MSU opponent.
Tum Tum Nairn tallied nine assists and no turnovers in 23 minutes, with seven of those assists coming in the first half.
Miles Bridges and Nick Ward led MSU with 15 points and nine rebounds each. Joshua Langford added 13 points and Cassius Winston scored seven, as Michigan State's four freshmen combined for 50 points.
Nine different Spartans scored in the contest and MSU held a 30-8 advantage in bench points.
Michigan State owned an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers and the Spartans are 11-1 this season when winning the points off turnovers category.
The Spartans got out in transition to outscore the Nittany Lions 16-0 on the fast break.
