An early goal put MSU in a hole it couldn't get out of Sunday.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Â An early goal put Michigan State women's soccer in a hole at rival Michigan Sunday afternoon, on the way to falling 2-0 on the road at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Spartans fall to 5-9-3 overall and 0-8-2 in conference play, while the Wolverines improve to 9-8-1 and 5-5-1 in B1G action.Â
Â
How It Happened:Â With a few players unavailable for action causing lineup changes, Michigan got on the board in the first minute as players were adjusting to new roles. A one-time strike from 12-yards out by Nicki Hernandez that redshirt-junior goalkeeper Reilley Ott was unable to get a hand on gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans started to find their offensive rhythm 25 minutes into the game, getting chances to counter-attack in the final third. The best look at an equalizer came in the 32nd minute when freshman Gia Wahlberg played a great ball, looking upper 90, but it glanced off the crossbar keeping it a 1-0 game.Â
Â
MSU had another great chance to find the equalizer in the 60th minute. Wahlberg sent a cross to sophomore Michelle Herring, who had space in the box, but her one-time touch sailed wide with an open net in front.Â
Â
Ott made four strong saves in the second half as Michigan went forward looking to find its second goal. The Wolverines finally broke through for that score in the 73rd minute when Emma Cooper finished from eight yards out off a short corner kick.Â
Â
"Getting the ball across the line continues to be our Achilles' heel," Saxton said. "We did well to create chances, but you have to score to give yourself a chance. Reilley did well today under the circumstances she was put in. She did a very nice job as she has all year and continued to lead well."Â
Â
Ott made eight saves on the day for MSU, while Wahlberg tallied three shots on the other end. Junior Hannah Jones took three shots for the Spartans, and Herring, junior Sadie Misiewicz, and freshman Sam Sklarski each took one shot. Â
Up Next:Â Michigan State travels to Lincoln, Nebraska for the final game of the regular season. The Spartans and Huskers will kickoff at 1 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 24 from Hibner Stadium, in a game that was rescheduled due to snowy weather conditions.

"We had a lot of gritty performances individually," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We had to have people take on new roles today in some spots, and they did a great job. The effort from Sam White and Sadie Misiewicz in their new roles was great. They accounted well for themselves in their new roles. There was no lack of effort from anybody out there."
