
Wrestling to Compete Four Times in Two Days at South Beach Duals

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fresh off a second-place tournament finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions prior to the holiday, the undefeated Michigan State wrestling team is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this weekend for the ever challenging South Beach Duals hosted at the Broward County Convention Center. The Spartans will face-off against four teams over two days in dual meet action.
Things get started on Saturday against Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET prior to a 1 p.m. ET dual against West Virginia. Action concludes on Sunday with an 11 a.m. ET dual against No. 18-ranked Wyoming and a 1 p.m. ET contest with Kent State. Coverage of the event will be provided by TrackWrestling ($).

Michigan State placed 10 wrestlers in the top six, which includes four finalists and one champion at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday, December 20 en route to a second place overall finish at the tournament.
The Spartans finished the tournament with 150.5 team points, second to just No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State who took the team title with 204.5 points. This is the second time Michigan State has placed second in Reno in the last three years as they took second with 129 points during the 2016-17 season.
Redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey was the top seeded wrestler at 184 pounds and improved to 15-0 on the season with a tournament championship on Thursday. Previously, Caffey was crowned the 184 pound champion at the MSU Open and the Navy Classic.
Other finalists for the Spartans included sophomore Rayvon Foley at 125 pounds, and redshirt seniors Anthony Tutolo at 133 pounds and Austin Eicher at 141 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes placed fourth at 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker was fifth at 157 pounds and redshirt freshman Brad Wilton was fifth at 197 pounds. Taking sixth place at 141 and 149 pounds respectively were redshirt sophomore Alex Hrisopoulos and redshirt freshman Jaden Enriquez.
Freshman Peyton Omania competed as an unattached wrestler and advanced to the semifinals at 149 pounds. Omania finished the tournament fourth in his division, falling to Old Dominion's Kenan Carter, 6-0, in the third place bout.
SCOUTING SPARTAN OPPONENTS
The Spartans open the weekend against Southern Illinois Edwardsville who owns an 0-3 dual meet record on the season thus far and have no wrestlers ranked in the InterMat Top 20.
West Virginia is 1-4 in the dual meet season with all four losses coming against teams ranked in the NWCA Top 25 poll. Redshirt freshman Joey Thomas leads the Mountaineers in wins with 11 at 125 pounds. Matthew Schmitt is making his return to the team from injury at 133 pounds and is currently 6-0 on the season.
Wyoming is the lone ranked opponent that MSU will face in Florida, coming into the weekend ranked No. 18 overall by the NWCA following a fourth place team finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada. The Cowboys have three ranked wrestlers by InterMat in No. 12 Montorie Bridges at 133 pounds, No. 9 Branson Ashworth at 165 pounds and No. 20 Brandon Andrews at 285 pounds. 141 pounder Sam Turner is ranked as high as No. 14 on other outlets after being named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in Reno.
Kent State is a battle-tested team with nine duals under their belt thus far with a 4-5 record in those duals. At 184 pounds, Andrew McNally is the team leader in wins with 19 on the season and holds a 19-4 overall record. 133 pounder Tim Rooney has the next best record for the golden flashes at 15-5.
