EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball's six-game win streak was halted with an 8-2 loss to Maryland Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field in game two of the key Big Ten Conference series.
MSU is now 16-22 overall and 7-6 in B1G play, also having a seven-game Big Ten win streak stopped. Maryland moves to 18-24 overall and 4-9 in conference contests.
"Disappointing with the way that we played, but tomorrow we still have a chance to win the series," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said.
Sophomore left fielder Bryce Kelley was 2-for-5 with a run scored, fellow sophomore, center fielder Danny Gleaves, was 2-for-4, while freshman third baseman Zach Iverson and senior shortstop Kory Young were both 1-for-3 with an RBI each. Senior first baseman Zack McGuire was 1-for-4. Senior designated hitter Chad Roskelly was held without a hit, snapping his hitting streak at 15 games, but did reach base on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning to extend his reached base streak to 20 games.
Just like Friday's series opener, Maryland scored first, plating a run in the top of the first, with Nick Dunn belting a one-out home run over the wall in right and into the Red Cedar River.
The Terps kept their momentum going in the second inning, loading the bases then drawing a walk to bring in a run and chase starter Mason Erla. After another walk drove in the second run of the frame, Kevin Biondic singled through the left side for a two-run single giving Maryland four runs in the frame and a 5-0 lead.
Michigan State thought it had cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second. Junior right fielder Marty Bechina belted a two-out shot down the left field line and into the trees beyond left field wall that was originally ruled and signaled a home run, yet after Bechina completed his home run trot, the umpires met and overruled the home call and ruled it a foul ball. Bechina struck out on the next pitch, ending the inning and keeping MSU off the scoreboard.
The visiting Terps added a run in the top of the fourth on Dunn's second home run, which mirrored the one in the opening frame, over the wall in right and into the Red Cedar River for a 6-0 Maryland advantage.
MSU got on the board in the fourth, with Kelley leading off with a single. After moving to second on a groundout, Kelley scored on an RBI single to right by Iverson, closing the gap to 6-1.
The Spartans closed to 6-2 in the home half of the fifth, as Bechina starting things off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gleaves followed with an infield single, bringing Young to the dish and he laced an RBI single to left to plate Bechina.
That would be the closest that MSU would get as Maryland added a run in the seventh on a leadoff double and a single, and another in the ninth for the final scoring.
The Spartans and Terps wrap up the three-game B1G series on Sunday, both with 1:05 p.m. start times.
