LAST TIME OUT . . .
Michigan State gymnastics finished in third place with a score of 194.900 at the Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 12, facing three teams ranked in the top-15 of the Road to Nationals poll.
Â
No. 2 UCLA won the meet with a score of 197.700, followed by No. 9 California at 196.075. No. 14 UC Davis was behind MSU in fourth place, scoring 194.125. The Spartans (1-3) improved their opening-weekend score of 191.700 against No. 25 NC State by 3.2 points with a solid showing last Saturday.
"We were really pleased with the girls overall performance," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "Warmups went great. They were focused, and it transferred over in competition. It was nice starting on floor as the girls performed well, had fun, and the crowd response helped us gain some momentum for the remaining events."
Â
Michigan State tallied a 49.025 on floor, a 48.750 on vault, a 48.350 on bars and a 48.775 on the beam for its final score of 194.900. UCLA scored 49.075 on vault, 49.45 on bars, 49.475 on beam and 49.700 on the floor to take the meet victory. Starting on floor, junior Gabriella Douglas tied her personal-best with a 9.85 to lead the Spartans.Â

Â

Â
On bars for rotation three, senior Jessica Ling was the top Spartan with a 9.80. Mitchell wasn't far behind with a 9.70, while Ewing and Shirley both scored 9.625.Â
Â
Closing on the beam, MSU was led by 9.85's from both Douglas and Raybon. Mitchell and freshman Alyssa Wiedeman both scored 9.75.Â
"Our vaults are getting more consistent, we just need to continue working on amplitude, shapes, and landings," Rowe said. "Bars was a big improvement over last week, but we still have a ways to go in swinging more aggressive and sticking dismounts. I was really proud of our beam squad tonight, as they stayed focused and closed the meet looking confident and fighting for every tenth! Overall, I'm pleased with the outcome. We still have work to do and we will continue to improve!"
