She became the second Spartan to win a WNBA championship.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Spartan All-American Aerial Powers captured her first WNBA Championship Thursday when the Washington Mystics stopped the Connecticut Sun 89-78 in Washington D.C. on Thursday in a deciding Game 5. Powers becomes the second Spartan to win a WNBA after current MSU assistant coach Kristin Haynie won a title with the Sacramento Monarchs in 2005.
After dropping Game 4, the series returned to Washington for the final game of the championship. Powers scored a playoff-high 15 points in game four. In Game 5, Emma Meesseman scored 22 points and Delle Donne added 21 to help the Washington Mystics beat the Connecticut Sun in the winner-take-all Game 5 of the Finals.
Coach Mike Thibault earned his first WNBA championship. The league's all-time winningest coach had reached the Finals three times in his career – twice with Connecticut – and last season with Washington, but fell short each time.
Powers was the fifth overall pick by the Dallas Wings in the 2016 WNBA draft. The Detroit, Michigan native was one of seven Spartans to be drafted and is highest MSU player ever drafted. She is in her second season with the Mystics after being drafted and played in 30 of their 34 games. For the season, she averaged 11.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
