MSU Women’s Soccer Hosts Maryland and No. 21 Rutgers This Week

Michigan State kicks off the week against Maryland on Thursday night at 7 p.m. under the lights at DeMartin Stadium.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer hosts two East Coast B1G opponents at DeMartin Stadium this week. MSU will host Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. before hosting No. 21-ranked Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 27 for Senior Day.
Michigan State currently sits at 8-7-1 on the season, with a 1-6-1 mark in Big Ten play.
Both games this week will be streamed online on BTN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans look to bounce back after falling to #19 Michigan, 2-1, at home last weekend.
After being down 2-0 at halftime, the Spartans rallied a comeback in the second half and scored two unanswered goals.
Freshman Bria Schrotenboer scored her first career goal on a header off a CK by junior Bella Jodzis. Paige Webber tied the game at 2-2 off a long pass by sophomore Sam Sklarski.
Michigan broke the tie in the 84th minute off a miss-kicked ball.
Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal had a career-high 11 saves against the Wolverines.
SENIOR DAY
On Sunday, Michigan State women's soccer will honor the team's 12 seniors - Reilley Ott, Amy Krause, Michaela Kovacs, Kassidy Madrigal, Lydia Franks, Julia Crowe, Hannah Jones, Marta Gappy, Celia Oatis, Brittany Tanner, Sadie Misiewicz and Madison VanDyke - prior to the start of the game for Senior Day.
AROUND THE BIG TEN
Wisconsin is the only team left undefeated in the Big Ten. The Badgers tie for first in the Big Ten with 22 points and a 7-0-1 mark. Michigan ties Wisconsin for first with 22 points and a 7-1-1 mark.
Wisconsin (No. 10), Michigan (No. 16) and Rutgers (No. 21) are the three Big Ten teams in the United Soccer Coaches poll, with Iowa also receiving votes.
DOWN THE STRETCH
The Spartans continue the final four-game homestand to conclude the regular season this weekend.
Michigan State will close the season against Indiana at home on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the regular season finale for both teams. The teams were originally scheduled to play on Sept. 27, but inclement weather caused the game to be postponed.
DEFENDING DEMARTIN
MSU boasts a home record of 6-2-0 this season, which marks the most wins at home since 2012 when the team had seven home wins.
The Spartans have recorded three shutouts in East Lansing. The three clean sheets at home are the most since the 2015 season when the team also shut out three opponents.
CLOSE CALLS
The Spartans' last three games have been decided by just one goal.
In the last road trip of the season, MSU struck early against Northwestern and Illinois but fell, 2-1, in both games.
FRESHMEN IN THE LINEUP
True freshmen Paige Webber and Bria Schrotenboer have earned starting positions in the Spartan lineup this season.
Webber is the only freshman to start in all 16 games this season and has 14 points with six goals and two assists to begin her rookie campaign.
Schrotenboer has started in 13 games on the Spartan backline this season and scored her first career goal against Michigan last weekend. The freshman missed three games at the beginning of the season to train with the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team in California.
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
The all-time series record between MSU and Maryland is all tied up at 1-1-2. The most recent match up was in College Park on Oct. 21, 2017, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
The Terrapins have an overall record of 8-6-3 and a conference record of 4-4-1. Maryland hosted Purdue on Oct. 20, they won 2-1.
Redshirt-sophomore Alyssa Poarch leads the team in points (18) and goals (8).
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Michigan State is searching for its first win against the Scarlet Knights on Sunday as Rutgers leads the all-time series, 5-0.
Last season, MSU and a nationally ranked Rutgers team met in East Lansing on Oct. 18, which resulted in a 1-0 Scarlet Knight win in double overtime.
Rutgers has a record of 12-2-2 and a conference record of 6-2-1. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 21st in the nation.
The team is led by junior forwards Amirah Ali and Nneka Moneme. The pair have scored 16 of the teams 27 total goals and also account for 36 of the team's 75 total points (48 percent).
Rutgers will travel to Ann Arbor for a match up with Michigan before making the trip to East Lansing on Sunday.
MICHIGAN STATE NOTES
The Spartans have nine different goal scorers through the 16 matches. The nine goal scorers tops last season's numbers, with there only being six goal scorers through all 18 games in 2018.
Michigan State has had four overtime games this season. The Spartans are 2-1-1 in overtime games this season.
Through 16 games, the Spartans have 27 total goals, which ties for third in the Big Ten. The 27 goals are the most in a season since 2013 when the team scored 31 goals.
