
Spartans Clash at Green and White Wrestle Offs

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling competed in its annual Green and White Wrestle Offs, Friday evening at IM Sports West. Team Green survived a late rally by Team White to secure a 25-11 victory.
Over the course of 10 matches on the evening, seven were decisions, one major decision, a tech fall and a fall were recorded by the Green and White.
After the prelims were held earlier Friday, action kicked off in the finals Friday night with the 125 pound final, where redshirt senior Logan Griffin took the mat against Ethan Curtin. Griffin scored a takedown in the first period and never looked back, claiming a 3-0 decision over Curtin.
At 133 pounds, redshirt senior Garrett Pepple and freshman Jordan Hamdan took the mat. Pepple landed an early takedown in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead. A reversal by Pepple late in the second pushed his lead to 4-0, before adding his second takedown of the match in the third period plus one for riding time to earn 7-0 win for Team Green.Â
Freshman Jordan Crace extended Team Green's lead to 9-0 in the 141 matchup, battling his way to a 3-2 decision against redshirt junior Matt Santos.Â
The closest match of the night came at 149 pounds with redshirt sophomore Jaden Enriquez and redshirt junior Alex Hrisopoulos. Enriquez earned the bouts first point with an escape in the second period, before Hrisopoulos followed with an escape of his own in the third to force a sudden victory showdown. After no score in the extra period, the pair battled into tiebreakers, with Hrisopoulos coming away with a takedown and near fall to claim the win, 7-1, and push Team Green's lead to 12-0.
Redshirt junior Jake Tucker represented Green faced off against redshirt sophomore Nathan Atienza at 157. Tucker's two takedowns proved to be the decider, winning 5-3 over Atienza and giving Team Green a 15-0 lead.
Two-time NCAA Qualifier Drew Hughes matched up with redshirt junior Austin Hiles at 165 pounds. Hughes scored a takedown in period one to go up early. Hiles earned a point in the second for stalling to cut the lead to 2-1. Hiles recorded a late escape to tie the match at two, but Hughes' three-plus minutes of riding time gave him the 3-2 decision and put Team White on the board.Â
Team White began to rally, winning the next two matches at 174 and 184 pounds. Redshirt freshman Nathan Jimenez took on fellow redshirt freshman, Ian Burress. Jimenez led 3-1 after one and never looked back, winning an 8-3 decision over Burress.Â
In the 184 bout, 2019 NCAA Qualifier Cam Caffey scored a dominant 22-7 tech fall win over freshman Easton Turner. Caffey exploded in the first period, racing out to a 10-2 lead. The redshirt sophomore continued to dominate in the second and third on his way to the win. With the win, Team White cut Team Green's lead to four at 15-11.Â
Team Green's redshirt sophomore Brad Wilton provided the lone fall of the night for either squad. After a scoreless first period with redshirt sophomore Brenden McRill, Wilton claimed the fall at 3:55 in the second period for Team Green, extending the lead to 10.
Redshirt junior Christian Rebottaro sealed the victory for Team Green at heavyweight, recording a 10-0 major decision win over redshirt sophomore Nick Cooper.
MSU kicks off the season with the Michigan State Open next Saturday, Nov. 2. Action will kick off at 9:30 a.m. at Jenison Field House.
