Meet the Spartans: Jacob Spiess

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling will feature a newcomer weekly throughout the preseason in order to "Meet the Spartans" leading up to the 2019-20 season. This week, redshirt junior Jacob Spiess (Delta, Ohio / Delta High) sat down with msuspartans.com to answer some questions.
1. Why did you choose to wrestle at Michigan State?

I chose Michigan State because the coaches are great and the program is becoming something special.

2. What are you most excited about as you begin your Spartan wrestling career?
Â
I am most excited to put on the Spartan singlet and representing Michigan State University.
Â
3. When did you first start wrestling?
Â
I started wrestling when I was five years old.
Â
4. What is your favorite wrestling memory?
Â
My favorite wrestling memory was winning team state titles with my wrestling team in high school.
Â
5. What are you majoring in at Michigan State and why?
Â
I am majoring in communication because I want to sharpen up my social skills for the future.
Â
6. Who has taught you the most about wrestling growing up?
Â
My youth coach Mike Mattin. He brought me in the program and always had the best clinics around to help me become the best wrestler.

7. If you were a superhero, what would be your power and what would be your name?
Â
My power would be Super Speed and my name would be 'SpeeDer'.
Â
8. What is your favorite meal?
Â
My favorite meal is steak and cheesy potatoes.

9. Favorite TV show?
Â
My favorite TV show is Friday Night Lights.
Â
10. Favorite thing to do besides wrestling?
I enjoy going fishing.
Prior to MSU:Â Prior to wrestling at Eastern Michigan from 2016-18, Spiess lettered all four years at Delta High School in Ohio under Anthony Carrizales...Compiled a 178-13 record during high school, including three individual state titles and four league championships...Chosen as team captain for wrestling team in 2016.
