Michigan State got on the board first with a 1-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Brian Lewerke to sophomore fullback Max Rosenthal with 1:48 left in the opening quarter. It was Rosenthal's first career TD catch.
The Wolverines took a 17-7 halftime lead, kicking a field goal with 15 seconds left. MSU took the second half kickoff and drove to midfield before a turnover thwarted the drive.Â
Later in the third quarter, junior placekicker Matt Coghlin split the uprights from 35-yards out to pull the Spartans within 24-10 with 6:43 left in the third quarter.Â
Lewerke ended the game 17-of-30 for 166 yards, adding 22 rushing yards. Junior wide receiver Cody White had six catches for 78 yards, including a 29-yard reception that was initially called a touchdown, but after video review, was marked down at the 1. Lewerke connected with Rosenthal in the end zone on the next play.
Senior linebacker Tyriq Thompson and sophomore safety Xavier Henderson led the MSU defense with nine tackles apiece. Junior linebacker Antjuan Simmons added seven stops, including two tackles for loss and one sack, as the Spartans had four sacks on the day.
Michigan State has two regular-season games left, heading to Piscataway, N.J., next week on Saturday, Nov. 23 to take on Rutgers in a noon kickoff. The Spartans host Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Spartan Stadium on MSU Senior Day.
