Wrestling Travels to Annapolis for 42nd Navy Classic

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling heads east to Annapolis, Md. to the Naval Academy on Saturday, Nov. 23 for the Navy Classic inside Navy's Wesley Brown Field House.

The Spartans will join 17 teams:Â Air Force, American, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, The Citadel, Cleveland State, Edinboro, George Mason, Kent State, Lock Haven, Michigan State, Navy, Ohio, Old Dominion, Oregon State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech - in the 42nd annual Navy Classic.

"This is a great opportunity for our guys to compete and confirm that the things they have been working on are paying off," said MSU wrestling head coach Roger Chandler. "We're really looking forward to being in a team tournament format where our guys will need to be looking for bonus points all the time. The goal is to wrestle within ourselves, look to always score points and get the bonus point wins."

About the Navy Classic
Action begins at 10 a.m. with preliminary rounds, followed by the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. and finals at 5 p.m. Admission is free to the event, and live scoring will be provided by FloArena. There will be no live streaming available.

Three teams at the event currently rank in the top-25 of the latest NWCA Coaches Poll: Virginia Tech (16), Lock Haven (23) and Old Dominion (25). Rutgers and Campbell, along with the Spartans, are among others receiving votes.

The Spartans claimed the 2018 Navy Classic crown and look to become one of only two other schools besides Navy to repeat as champions.

MSU begins the dual season with a 2-0 record after defeating Kent State and No. 20 Oklahoma last Satruday, Nov. 16 at Kent State's tri-meet in Kent, Ohio. The Spartans won handily over the Golden Flashes, 36-6, and followed with a 21-16 win over the Sooners. The win marked the first over a top-25 opponent for the Spartans since 2013.

Caffey, a 2019 NCAA Qualifier, leads the Spartans with a 6-2 record and 2-0 mark in dual action. Caffey recorded two falls over Kent State and Oklahoma last Saturday, Nov. 16 in Kent, Ohio. Redshirt juniors Jake Tucker and Drew Hughes are off to solid starts to their junior campaigns. Tucker is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in duals, while Hughes is 2-0 in dual action with two falls. Redshirt senior Logan Griffin is coming off a strong weekend, where he recorded two falls for the Spartans and holds a 5-2 record.
