Sprinters, jumpers and throwers will compete Friday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State track and field opens the indoor season on Friday, Dec. 6 at the GVSU Holiday Open. The meet will take place at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Mich.
To kick off the indoor track and field season, a group of sprinters, throwers and jumpers will make the short trip to Grand Valley for the opening meet.
"Mostly it's just a nice way to have a test at the end of a long fall as we started training right after Labor Day," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "It's nice to get in and try to run with or against people with different colored uniforms. From our standpoint, what we want to see is if the things that we've done this fall, what has it led to? Have we made some progress? It's kind of like the first cross country meet. You're trying to get your feet wet and you're trying to get used to new warm up routines and expectations and just start establishing some important patterns for competition through the entire season. It's a good starting place and it will also give our coaches an idea of where everyone's at."
The Holiday Open begins at 2:45 p.m. with the men's and women's high jump, with field events and running events beginning at 3 p.m.
Meet Schedule
After months of training through the summer and fall, the Holiday Open marks the first time for sprinters, jumpers and throwers to compete since the conclusion of the outdoor season last spring. This meet also gives younger athletes, including freshmen, an opportunity to compete in a collegiate meet.
A year ago at the GVSU Holiday Open, the Spartans began the indoor season with 13 top-five finishes including first-place finishes for Rebecca Mammel and Jerimiah Evans. Mammel placed first in the women's weight throw with a throw of 19.98 meters while Evans placed first in the men's shot put with a throw of 17.42 meters.
"We're just expecting them to go in and be at their best," Drenth said. "If they advance and get to run finals and be at the front of their races, that would be our expectation for everybody that's competing. It's not a huge group of athletes, but every one of them has a responsibility to get in and really just get themselves going."
Following the semester break, the indoor track season will resume on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Michigan Open in Ann Arbor, Mich.
