Spartan Women Drop First Home Game of the Season to Ohio State Thursday

Freshman guard Nia Clouden earns her third 20-point game of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman guard Nia Clouden scored a game-high 23 points, but the Michigan State women's basketball team could not overcome the sharp-shooting Ohio State Buckeyes, falling 77-70 Thursday night at the Breslin Center. It was a battle all game with a total of 18 lead changes.
Michigan State holds a 17-9 overall and 7-8 in Big Ten action, while Ohio State improves to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in league play. The Spartans have lost three-straight games for the first time this season. MSU had its 16-game winning streak halted by OSU, dating back to last season. This season, the Spartans are now 13-1 at the Breslin Center.
Freshman guard Nia Clouden earned her third 20-point game of the season with a game-high 23 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Redshirt-junior guard Shay Colley scored in double-figures for the fourth-straight game and the 16th time this season with 18 points. Redshirt-junior forward Victoria Gaines reached double figures in rebounding for the second time in the last three games with a game-high 11 boards.
Ohio State had five players in double figures led by 20 points from Janai Grooms, while Carmen Grande added 17 points.
Both teams got off to a fast start on the offensive side of the ball, but it was the Buckeyes who jumped out to an early 15-11 lead. Michigan State ended the quarter strong, using a 6-0 run to take a brief 19-18 lead, before OSU added the final bucket of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Spartan re-took the lead before an OSU 7-0 run gave the Buckeyes the 29-25 lead with 6:13 left in the period. Michigan State hit a cold spell, going 0-for-7 from the field to end the quarter. A Clouden free throw with 20 seconds left were the final points of the half with Ohio State lead 35-32. MSU went the final 4:45 without a field goal.
Foul troubles began to mount for the Spartans in the third quarter with Colley and senior center Jenna Allen both getting sidelined due to foul trouble. Colley turned it on in the third period with six points. Her layup with 1:29 left in the period gave MSU its first lead of the half, 48-46.
The Spartans took a three-point lead after a Clouden jumper with 5:09 left in the final stanza, but from that point Ohio State took control. Once the Buckeyes took the lead on a Grande 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining, they did not relinquish their lead. Ohio State out-scored Michigan State 27-18 in the last 10 minutes led by 10 points from Grande.
Michigan State will now celebrate its lone senior Jenna Allen on Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 24 against in-state rival Michigan at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.

The Brampton, Ontario, Canada native has reached double figures 16 times this season, including in 11 of the last 12 games.

Ozment missed nine-straight games for the Spartans prior to returning in a limited capacity on February 7 against Iowa. Prior to her injury, Ozment was a key component off the Spartans bench averaging 8.3 points per game.
