EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team is set to host DePaul on Friday, March 1, at 5 p.m in the last non-conference home matchup this season at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
"I think things have been clicking in certain areas for us, so I just want to see us as tight and clean as possible coming off our last non-conference home match and also heading into spring break," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "I think just keep sticking with it – Let's tighten it up, let's get our energy throughout, let's make sure we don't have any lapses in anything and just continue rolling."
DePaul leads the all-time series history with a record of 6-3, as this will be the tenth meeting between the Spartans and the visiting Blue Demons. In the last meeting, MSU shut out DePaul on their home court, 7-0, on Feb. 24, 2018.
MSU has proven to be successful in home matches, posting a 9-3 record last season in East Lansing. They've continued this tradition so far this season with an undefeated 5-0 record in home matches.
The Spartans are coming off a successful weekend in which they swept both opponents, defeating Marquette, 6-1, on Feb. 22, before downing Dartmouth, 6-1, on Feb. 24. The team is now 8-4 on the season and has won five of their last six matches.
The Spartans have been able to secure the doubles point in nine matches this season.
Senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz have continued to lead the doubles lineup for the Spartans this spring, as they are 9-1 at the No. 1 doubles position and have won five-straight.
The duo of junior Samantha Memije and freshman Nicole Stephens have also been consistent for the Spartans, with a 6-1 record at No. 2 doubles
In singles, several Spartans are on winning streaks. Memije, who has three-straight wins at No. 1 singles, defeated both opponents in straight-sets this past weekend. Senior Davina Nguyen has won five-straight matches, playing a majority at the fifth and sixth positions.
Stephens was the first Spartan to reach double-digit victories this spring, currently tallying 10 wins.
The Spartans head to Las Vegas, Nevada, next week for their spring break trip, with matches against host UNLV and the University of San Diego. The team will play UNLV on Friday, March 8, with the match set to begin at 1 p.m. ET. MSU will close out the trip with a match versus San Diego on Sunday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m. ET.
