Rain shortens game to five innings
SPARTAN SYNOPSIS
Michigan State earned its second straight shutout victory of the season with a 3-0 rain-shortened decision (five innings) over Bryant University in Miami on Saturday.
The game, delayed at the start nearly three hours, saw the rain pop up again in the fifth inning, when the game was called due to field conditions.
Alli Walker tossed five innings of one-hit ball to earn the victory, striking out one and walking two. Jill McKeveny took the loss with two earned runs allowed, striking out six and walking four.
MSU's offense came from a pair of doubles from Charla Echols and MacKenzie Meech. Meech was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI in the contest.
TOP PERFORMERS
• Alli Walker tossed a complete game (5.0 IP), allowing one hit and striking out one, walking two and evening her record at 1-1 on the year.
• MacKenzie Meech went 2-2 with a double and two RBI.
• Charla Echols had an RBI double, her second two-bagger of the season.
STATS AND STORYLINES
• MSU led off the first and second innings with base hits, including Meech's first collegiate base hit to start off the second.
• Katie Quinlan led off the third with her second base hit of the day, and came home on a double by Charla Echols for a 1-0 lead. Echols was able to take third on the throw; Kaitlyn Eveland walked and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, and Meech laced a double up the middle to score both Charla Echols and Eveland and push the MSU lead to 3-0.
• Tiffany Bell broke through with Bryant's first base hit when she led off the fourth with a single up the middle, but got doubled off first when Kaleigh Goulart lined out to short.
• Walker surrendered a pair of walks in the top of the fifth as the rain and wind started to blow in once again. She got out of the inning without any damage, however, to post MSU's second straight shutout victory.
• Walker has thrown eight innings, and has yet to surrender an earned run over two appearances.
