MSU Gymnastics Earns Quad Meet Victory on Senior Day

Sophomore Lea Mitchell captures her fourth all-around title of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Behind a pair of event wins by sophomore Lea Mitchell, the Michigan State gymnastics team celebrated Senior Day with a quad meet victory over Ball State (194.850), UIC (194.325) and Alaska Anchorage (192.250), Sunday at Jenison Field House.Â
MSU closed out the home portion of the schedule with a 194.975, including 48.825 on vault, 48.875 on bars, 48.375 on beam and 48.900 on floor.
"We were really happy to steal the win in our last rotation, especially with it being senior day," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "I think a few emotions got us on a couple routines which counted for some deductions we've corrected most recently. We have a short week this week in preparation for the Big Ten Championships and plan on making a statement that will show what we're capable of. This team has a lot of passion and grit left in them and we're going to have fun putting it all together in State College."Â
With a strong showing on all four rotations, sophomore Lea Mitchell captured the all-around title with as score of 39.275, which was her second-best score of the season.
The Spartans started things off on beam with Mitchell leading the Spartans, tying a career high with a 9.825. Mitchell tied Ball State's Stefanie Schweikert for first in the event. Junior Gabriella Douglas finished third with a 9.80, while senior Roya Shirley added a 9.750 for MSU.
In the second rotation, Michigan State took to the bars, scoring a 48.875. A pair of Spartans captured the event title with matching 9.85 scores, as senior Jessica Ling and Mitchell had standout performances. Shirley tied for fourth with a career-best 9.80, matching her best score from the 2018 campaign. Fellow senior Molly Hoerner O'Malley also had a strong showing with a 9.725.
Mitchell had the strongest showing for Michigan State on beam, finishing fifth with a 9.70. Alaska's Sophia Hyderally won the event with a score of 9.875.Â
The Spartans sealed the victory on the final event of the meet, floor exercise. Once again, Douglas and Mitchell led the way, finishing tied for second with a scores of 9.875. Ball State's Kaitlyn Menzione was first with the best score of the day 9.90. Freshman Sidney Ewing also added a 9.775 to aid the Spartans' cause.
Following the meet, the Spartans honored senior managers, athletic trainers and student coach Brittini Chappell along with Drew Hendershot, Hoerner O'Malley, Ling and Shirley.
Michigan State continues its season at the Big Ten Championships March 23 in University Park and hosted by Penn State.
