Michigan State’s NCAA Tournament Run Halted by Notre Dame in the Second Round

Sophomore Sidney Cooks leads the Spartans for the second-straight game.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Sophomore forward Sidney Cooks had another standout performance in the NCAA Tournament, but the No. 9-seeded Michigan State women's basketball team ran into a determined No. 1-seeded Notre Dame, falling 91-63 in the second round Monday in South Bend, Indiana.
MSU ends its successful season with a 21-12, while Notre Dame once again advances to the Sweet 16 with a 32-3 record.
The second round game was the final game in the Green and White for senior center Jenna Allen, who was a three-year captain for the Spartans. Allen ended her career with 1,098 career points after scoring 12 points against the Fighting Irish. For the second-straight game, Cooks led MSU with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Off the bench, freshman forward Kayla Belles added 10 points.
Cooks had a brilliant two games in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 19.0 points over the two-game span. For the season she averaged 9.5 ppg for the season.
Notre Dame had four players in double figures led by 23 points from Arike Ogunbowale, while Jackie Young had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
After a quick start, both teams stalled on the offensive side. The Irish jumped out to a 11-6 lead as MSU endured a scoring drought that lastest 3:53. Allen came out fast for the Spartans, scoring four of MSU's first 11 points. After making four-straight buckets, Notre Dame opened up its first double-digit lead 21-10.
In the second quarter with fouls mounting for the Spartans, Notre Dame used a13-1 run over 3:08 to take a 41-20 advantage. Sidney Cooks was big for the Spartans in the first half, leading the way with nine first-half points with Allen adding eight. But the defending NCAA Champions proved to be to tough taking a 52-26 leading to the locker room.
Michigan State came out strong in the third quarter with seven quick points, but could not provide an answer for the Irish led by Shepard. Freshman guard Tory Ozment was strong in the third quarter with six points with Allen adding four. Notre Dame only out-scored the Spartans 21-17 in the period.
The fourth quarter was a great opportunity to see a glimpse at the future as Spartan freshmen forward Kayla Belles and Ozment joining freshman starter Nia Clouden in getting great minutes. Michigan State out-scored Notre Dame 20-18 in the final 10 minutes of action.

• Michigan State made its 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship as the ninth seed in the Chicago Regional. The Spartans reached the NCAA tournament for the 10th time in the past 12 seasons, dating back to 2007-08.
• Michigan State picked up assists on seven of its first 10 made baskets for the game, with the Spartans ultimately logging18 helpers on 25 total made shots from the floor.
