
Three MSU Gymnasts Qualify For NCAA Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State gymnastics had three individuals qualify for the NCAA Regionals, as announced during the selection show Monday evening. Sophomore Lea Mitchell will compete in the all-around, while senior Jessica Ling will compete on the uneven bars and junior Gabriella Douglas will compete on floor.
The three Spartan gymnasts will compete in the Baton Rouge Regional hosted by LSU. The meet will be held April 4-6 at LSU's Maravich Center, with the three Spartans competing on Friday, April 5. Mitchell will be paired with Arkansas and will be competing in Session I starting at 3 p.m. ET, while both Ling and Douglas will be paired with Auburn in Session II starting at 8 p.m. ET.
"We're thrilled that Jessica, Lea and Ella have qualified into this year's NCAA Regional under the new championship format," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "Jessica and Ella both have the capabilities to continue advancing in each of their events, as well as Lea in the all-around. All three of them have done amazing jobs at refining their gymnastics this season with great attention to detail and competing with confidence and consistency. We couldn't be more proud of them!"
Mitchell is making her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition for the Spartans. She is coming off her second-best score of the season (39.300) in the all-around at last week's Big Ten Championships in University Park, Pennsylvania.Â
The Boynton Beach, Florida native has won four all-around titles and grabbed at least a share of seven event titles this season. She set a new career-high in the all-around with a score of 39.350 at Eastern Michigan on March 1.Â
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Douglas has tallied six event wins this season for the Spartans. She has set a new career-high on floor four times with a season-best of 9.925 vs. Rutgers on Feb. 16, and has earned a 9.9 or better on floor five times. Douglas posted a new personal best of 9.850 on vault at Illinois on Feb. 8.
Douglas was named the Big Ten Conference Event Specialist of the Week on Feb. 5 after garnering a 9.900 to tie for first on floor, becoming the first Spartan gymnast to earn a weekly Big Ten Honor since Shanthi Teike was named Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22, 2010.
A senior from Wixom, Michigan, Ling set a new career-high at last week's Big Ten Championships with a 9.9 on bars to finish tied for seventh overall. Ling has earned two wins on the apparatus this season, tallied 9.8 or better on bars ten times, and has tied for second three times this season.Â
Tickets for the Baton Rouge Regional are available at LSUtix.net. All-session tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for youth (ages 3-12). Individual session tickets are also available now and $6 for adults and $3 for youth.
The top two teams from each second round session will advance to the Regional Final at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. The top two teams will then advance to NCAA Championships April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas.
The top all-arounder and top specialist for each event not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held April 19 and 20 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.Â
