Spartans Tie Season-High on Floor at Elevate The Stage

Freshman Ashley Hofelich tied for second in the vault competition to lead MSU.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Michigan State gymnastics tied its season-high floor exercise score of 49.200 on the way to a total of 195.025 at Elevate The Stage Friday night in Legacy Arena.
The Spartans totaled 48.800 on bars, 48.075 on beam, 49.200 on floor and 48.950 on vault for a team total of 195.025 to finish fourth. No. 8 Georgia posted a 49.175 on vault, 49.275 on bars, 49.325 on the beam and 49.575 on floor for the winning score of 197.350. No. 10 Minnesota took second-place (197.025) and No. 20 Arkansas was third (197.000).
Freshman Ashley Hofelich was the top Spartan on the podium, tying for second in the vault competition with a personal best 9.875. Sophomore Lea Mitchell earned a total of 39.100 to finish in sixth-place in the all-around competition, her sixth score of 39.0 or better this season.
MSU started on bars and were led by a pair of 9.825s from senior Jessica Ling and freshman Sydney Ewing. Sophomore Tristan Brown posted a 9.750, while sophomore Lea Mitchell and seniors Roya Shirley and Molly Hoerner-O'Malley all earned 9.700s.
On the balance beam for the second rotation, Mitchell and junior Alexandra Hoyer were the top Spartans each with a score of 9.750. Sophomore Madison McHale earned a 9.700 to round out MSU's top three scores on the event.
Moving to the floor for the third rotation, Douglas tied her second-best score of the season to lead the Spartans with a 9.900 and tie for sixth-place overall. It was her fourth score of 9.9 or better this year. Mitchell was close behind at 9.875, and Ewing set a new career best with a 9.850.
Finishing on vault, Hofelich's 9.875 led the Spartans, followed by Douglas with a 9.800, and Mitchell's 9.775. Ewing and sophomore Ashley Beatty both garnered a 9.750.
The Spartans return to Jenison Field House next week for Senior Day and a 2 p.m. ET quad meet with Ball State, UIC, and Alaska on Sunday, March 17.
