EAST LANSING – The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin April 10 with three former Spartan hockey players in the mix to chase the sport's ultimate prize. Torey Krug and the Boston Bruins will take on Toronto in round one, while in the Western Conference, the St. Louis-Winnipeg series pits former teammates Mackenzie MacEachern (St. Louis) and Mason Appleton (Winnipeg) against each other.
Krug put up 50-plus points for the third consecutive season for Boston. Despite being limited to 64 games due to injury, Krug compiled 53 points, including a career-high 47 assists. He also became Boston's highest-scoring American-born player with 288 career points.
MacEachern made his NHL debut on Jan. 10 and played in 29 games for the Blues. He scored his first-career goal on Jan. 21 at Los Angeles and produced a total of five points (3g, 2a), including a game-winning goal vs. Nashville on Feb. 9.
Appleton earned a call-up on Dec. 1 and played in 36 games for Winnipeg. He had 10 points (3g, 7a) and was plus-9. Like MacEachern, he also had a game-winning goal against Nashville, which came Jan. 17.
A total of 11 former Spartan hockey players played in the National Hockey League this past season, the most since 2015-16.
Behind the bench, first-year Carolina head coach Rod Brind'Amour is leading the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008-09.
MSU has had a Stanley Cup winner in seven of the last 13 seasons. Duncan Keith was the last Spartan to win the Cup as he claimed his third with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 while also taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. In total, 11 Spartans have hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup, including head coach Danton Cole with New Jersey in 1995.
