EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Racing at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River, the Michigan State rowing program competed against a pair of ranked Big Ten opponents in No. 9-ranked Ohio State and No. 16-ranked Rutgers on Saturday, April 13.
Competing against Rutgers in the morning session of the regatta, Michigan State earned its first victory of the season, taking first in the second varsity eight. MSU's second varsity eight boat finished with a time of 6:37.12 to best the Scarlet Knights who finished with a time of 6:38.78. In the afternoon, the 2V8 was defeated by the No. 9-ranked Buckeyes, finishing in 6:59.53 while Ohio State took first at 6:47.50.
"I thought all of our crews really did a decent job of getting off the start line this morning," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "The second varsity eight and the second novice eight really had a good fight all the way down the course and did a good job of staying composed."
Michigan State's first varsity eight kept things close with Rutgers in the morning session with a time of 6:31.82, finishing just six seconds behind a Rutgers crew that finished in 6:25.82. The Spartans had another strong showing in the afternoon, taking second to the Buckeyes with a time of 6:52.36.
"The varsity eight did a good job off the line as well," said Weise. "They never seemed to find a rhythm that they could sustain in the morning against Rutgers. They worked on that in the afternoon Ohio State and got better."
MSU's first varsity four took second in each of their races of the day while the second varsity four finished in third during each session.
"The fours showed improvement in-between races today," said Michigan State assistant coach Sam Sarff. "They were a bit tentative against Rutgers today, and that cost us. Against Ohio State they made some adjustments and had much better races. The varsity four has a lot of power, and as they get more time together, they are going to thrive. The second varsity four gets better every day and will continue to find more speed over the coming weeks."
On the novice side, both boats took second in each of their races of the day, with the second novice eight defeating Rutgers in the morning and Michigan in the afternoon sessions.
