EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State survived rough waters at Lake Lemon on Saturday, April 20, taking third place at the 11th annual Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Spartans (42 points) placed behind No. 16-ranked Indiana (72 points) and Notre Dame (48 points), racing at the Dale England Cup for the first time since the 2010-11. MSU placed first at the Dale England Cup during the 2010-11 season with 120 points, and were followed by Indiana with 100, Boston with 78, and Gonzaga with 62.
"Completely different conditions out there today, it was raining and in the 40's, and we're on a lake so it got really rough," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "For the novices and for the fours, they struggled with that, and the second eight since we don't have much experience in that boat. They weren't used to it and our river never gets like that so we don't ever practice in those conditions. I think we were fighting the conditions more than we were racing the others crews."
Point scoring events were the first to get underway on Saturday due to the inclement conditions. Michigan State's varsity eight boat took third with a time of 7:21.5 after a slow start in the first 500 meters of the race. After finding their rhythm in the final 1500 meters, the varsity eight closed the gap to 7.1 seconds behind leader Indiana and 1.33 seconds behind second-place Notre Dame. Despite their inexperience, the second varsity eight finished second to Indiana with a time of 7:47.5 and defeated Notre Dame by 5.02 seconds.
The fours were impacted by the racing conditions on Lake Lemon, placing third in the varsity four and the second varsity four.
Facing off against third varsity eight squads, the Michigan State novice eight took third with a time of 8:38.18. MSU's second varsity eight was the lone Spartan boat to take first on Saturday, defeating Notre Dame by 16.56 seconds with a time of 8:25.8.
"I feel like we're a step away from being really fast in a lot of different boats," said Weise. "The crews are still motivated. They felt like they had a decent day of racing and are learning and getting faster every week. I think if they continue to push we'll find better results as the season goes on."
