EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State rowing heads to Raleigh, North Carolina this weekend for the inaugural Lake Wheeler Invitational hosted by Duke and North Carolina on April 26 and 27. The Spartans will compete in the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, and the varsity four at Lake Wheeler. Points will be awarded to each crew determined by placement in each race.
"I think it's going to be way more engaging this weekend," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "It's still only three boat races, but having nine teams there is going to make it a little bit bigger of an event and there's a little more energy to it."
Teams will race in three-boat heats on Friday to determine which boats will race one-another on Saturday. Racing on Saturday will feature the semifinals starting at 7:30 a.m. ET and the finals starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.
"From an emotional sense, this team is really good when they're at a high emotional state, so hopefully the energy of the event will help them this weekend," said Weise. "Hopefully this weekend can ramp them up a little bit because they do seem to perform well, just watching how they usually deal with it (high energy), I think it'll be a positive."
Last Time Out
Michigan State survived rough waters at Lake Lemon on Saturday, April 20, taking third place at the 11th annual Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Spartans (42 points) placed behind No. 16-ranked Indiana (72 points) and Notre Dame (48 points), racing at the Dale England Cup for the first time since the 2010-11. MSU placed first at the Dale England Cup during the 2010-11 season with 120 points, and were followed by Indiana with 100, Boston with 78, and Gonzaga with 62.
