
Spartan Track & Field Sending 25 Entries To NCAA East Preliminary Round

Michigan State travels to Jacksonville, Florida looking for a top-12 finish.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men and women's track & field programs will head to Jacksonville, Florida for the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Round May 23-25 at Hodges Stadium, hosted by the University of North Florida. The Spartans have a total of 25 entries in the East Preliminaries.Â

Michigan State begins action on Thursday, May 23. The top-12 in each event will advance to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
On the women's side, Michigan State has 18 different athletes competing in Jacksonville. The Spartan women have five athletes who qualified in the top 10 led by sophomore Sophia Franklin who is the third seed in the pole vault and is competing in the East Prelims for the second-straight year. Junior Dillon McClintock and junior Annie Fuller are both seeded in the top 10 in the women 1,500m, standing sixth and 10th, respectively. Three of the top five seeds come out of the Big Ten, along with Ohio State's Julie Rizk who is fourth. Junior Carlyn Arteaga and senior Kayla Kavulich also qualified in the 1,500m. McClintock has now qualified for East Prelims three-straight seasons.
Senior Taylor Mullins advances to the East Preliminary Round in the 400m hurdles for the third-straight season.
The Spartans continue to have a strong distance tradition with senior Erin McDonald competing in the 5,000m. She is currently seeded eighth in the East Prelims. Freshman Jenna Magness will make her East Preliminary debut, joining McDonald in the 5,000m. For the third-straight season Karrigan Smith with run the 3,000m steeplechase, as she is currently seeded 10th in the event. Junior Mackenzie Weiler will join Smith in the steeplechase.Â
Rounding out the distance group is a quartet of Spartans running the 10,000m in juniors Lynsie Gram, Jeralyn Poe and Amber Way, along with freshman India Johnson.Â
On the field, senior Ellen DiPietro will take part in the high jump for the fourth time in her career. In the shot put competition, the Spartans will be represented by sophomores Kayli Johnson and Nikole Sargent. Freshman Rebecca Mammel rounds the Spartan squad, competing in the hammer throw.
On the men's side, seven athletes will participate with senior Justine Kiprotich competing in the 1,500m after winning the Big Ten Championship last week. Kiprotich was the silver medalist in the NCAA Finals in 2017. He is the fifth ranked athlete in the East Prelims.
Sophomore Morgan Beadlescomb makes his East Preliminary debut, as the sixth seed in the men's 5,000m. Michigan State will also have a pair of hurdlers competing. Senior Will Agodu, fresh off his Big Ten title, is the 16th seed in the 11m hurdles. Junior Noah Burton will represent MSU in the 400m hurdles.
Michigan State will have three representatives in the men's field events. Sophomore Jerimiah Evans, who finished second at the B1G Championships, will compete in the discus. Evans is the overall third seed and one of only four in the East to throw over 60 meters. Fellow sophomore Nick Kramer will take part in the hammer throw for the second-straight season, while freshman Trevor Stephenson will compete in the pole vault.
Juniors Nick Guerrant and Asya Reynolds have already qualified for Nationals in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, and neither will compete at the East Preliminary Round. Both captured Big Ten titles in their events last week.
The preliminary competitions are scheduled for May 23-25. Â The University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida will host the East Preliminary and California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California will host the West Preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
