EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field associate head coach Lisa Senakiewich was named Great Lakes Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year; it was announced Friday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Senakiewich, in her ninth year with the program, captured her first Great Lakes Region coaching honor. She also becomes the first Spartan assistant coach to earn the accolade since John Newell in 2011.
Under Senakiewich's tutelage, Michigan State had two athletes advance to the NCAA Outdoor Finals, with Dillon McClintock qualifying in the 1,500m and Karrigan Smith reaching in the 3,000m steeplechase. In total, Senakiewich coached 12 athletes that competed in the NCAA East Prelims.
Junior Karrigan Smith earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in the steeplechase with her second-place finish. For the season, junior Dillon McClintock had the 10th-best qualifying time in the 1,500m in the East (4:16.74) while Smith had the 12th-best qualifying time in the steeple (10:10.91).
She had four athletes advance to the Preliminary Round in the 10,000m, another four in the 1,500m and two in both the steeple and 5,000m.
Each of the nine regions – Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Mountain, Northeast, South, South Central, Southeast and West – honored both gender's top track athletes and field athletes as well as the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches.
Senakiewich and the Spartans will be back in action in Austin, Texas for the NCAA Finals, June 5-8. Michigan State will have six athletes competing in the NCAA Finals.
