Spartans Head to Michigan for Final Big Ten's Tune Up

EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â Michigan State rowing heads to Belleville, Michigan for the second time this season on Sunday, May 5 to face No. 5 Michigan and Louisville in the final regular season tune up prior to the Big Ten Rowing Championships on May 19.

Last Time Out
Racing at the inaugural Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, North Carolina last weekend, Michigan State rowing finished in fourth place with 66 total points despite traveling just three boats to the event. All three boats in attendance (varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four) turned in season-best times in the finals, marking a positive developmental step heading into a May 5 meeting with No. 5-ranked Michigan and Louisville in Belleville, Michigan.
"The crews keep getting faster," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "All of the boats had their best race of the season and that's all that I can ask for at this point.They're really making some great strides."
Racing in the top finals grouping alongside No. 17-ranked Duke and Navy, the varsity eight finished with a season-best time of 6:29.168 to defeat Duke and finish less than three second behind Navy. Also in the top finals group, the second varsity eight turned in a season-best time of 6:28.557 to take second place, finishing behind Duke by just over two seconds. MSU's varsity four took fifth at the event, finishing with a season-best time of 7:32.752.
Spartans Receiving Votes in 2019 USRowing/CRCA Poll
Michigan State received 28 votes in the latest poll released on May 1 after garnering 26 votes a week ago. MSU is the second team out of the top 20, trailing No. 20 Syracuse (51 votes) and Minnesota (35 votes). Michigan is the No. 5-ranked team in the latest poll while Louisville received five votes. Michigan State will travel to the 2019 Big Ten Rowing Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin on Sunday, May 19 at Devil's Lake State Park. The winner of the 2019 Big Ten Rowing Championships will receive an automatic bid into the 22-team NCAA Championships that take place May 31 through June 2 in Indianapolis. Currently, the Big Ten has six teams ranked in the top 20 nationally with Michigan State and Minnesota receiving votes.
