
Eleven Michigan State Gymnasts Named WCGA Scholar All-Americans

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Eleven members of the 2019 Michigan State gymnastics team have been named Scholar All-Americans by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) as announced on Monday, August 19.
Ashley Beatty, Tristan Brown, Gabriella Douglas, Sydney Ewing, Molly Hoerner-O'Malley, Ashley Hofelich, Jessica Ling, Madison McHale, Lea Mitchell, Jenna Wicker and Alyssa Wiedeman were all recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2018-19 academic year.
The 11 Spartan Scholar All-American gymnasts are the most since the 2008 season when 12 gymnasts were named Scholar All-Americans.
Meeting the required 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) or better required, more than 56% of student-athletes earned Scholastic All-America honors. The percentage of women's collegiate gymnasts honored last year was 55%.
Madison McHale and Lea Mitchell were two of WCGA's record number of student-athletes – 125 (8.91%) – who earned a 4.0 GPA during the 2018-19 academic year, earning them Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors. The two sophomores were named WCGA Scholar All-Americans for the second year in a row.
McHale, a sophomore from Naperville, Illinois, is a hospitality business major and had a 4.0 GPA.
A native of Boynton Beach, Florida, Mitchell is a sophomore journalism major and had a 4.0 GPA.
Beatty, a sophomore from Macomb Township, Michigan, is majoring in physiology and had a 3.69 GPA. Beatty is a two-time WCGA Scholar All-American and was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree this past season.
A sophomore from DeWitt, Michigan, Brown is a child development major and had a 3.52 GPA. Brown also received Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Douglas, a native of Toronto, Ontario, is majoring in kinesiology and had a 3.81 GPA. She garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades and Academic All-Big Ten honors. Douglas is a three-time WCGA Scholar All-American.
A freshman from Frisco, Texas, Ewing is an advertising major with a 3.67 GPA.
A senior from Farmington Hills, Michigan, Hoerner-O'Malley is an advertising management major and had a 3.94 GPA. Hoerner-O'Malley was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and received Academic All-Big Ten honors. Hoerner-O'Malley was named a WCGA Scholar All-American for the third year in a row.
Hofelich, a freshman from Novi, Michigan, is a business major and had a 3.54 GPA.
Ling, a native of Walled Lake, Michigan, was named a three-time WCGA Scholar All-American for the third year in a row. Ling is a senior majoring in kinesiology and had a 3.92 GPA. In addition to receiving Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades and Academic All-Big Ten honors, Ling was the female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor.
A freshman from Allen, Texas, Wicker is a business major and had a 3.54 GPA.
Wiedeman, a freshman from Springboro, Ohio, is a dietetics major with a 3.44 GPA.
