MSU faced a highly-competitive field, with many ranked Big Ten teams.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Michigan State cross country sent another group of runners to the Buckeye Preview Meet at the Ohio State University Golf Club, the site of the 2019 Big Ten Championships in November.
The Spartans sent a different group of runners to the Panorama Farms Invitational yesterday, which resulted in a first-place finish on the women's side, led by Annie Fuller who placed second, and a second-place finish on the men's side, with Morgan Beadlescomb finishing in first.
"This was a really good opportunity for some of our younger athletes to see high-level competition, and I think that goes a long way in their development, just being able to race in that type of environment," MSU assistant coach Aaron Simoneau said. "Get them out of their comfort zone a little bit and just really get through a race that's going to be highly competitive at the front. What we were really looking for is seeing their composure to the competition; how they were going to handle adversity, how they were going to react to a highly-competitive field and what their behavior was going to be like down the stretch."
The women placed ninth in the 6k, tallying 255 points. The top five teams were Michigan (41 points), Illinois (61 points), Ohio State (74 points), Penn State (87 points) and Grand Valley State (131 points). The men did not have a team score for the meet, with only four runners competing. Penn State won the men's race with a score of 53 points.
At the Buckeye Preview Meet, young Spartan runners were challenged on a championship course, which the Spartans will revisit in five weeks at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3. The field boasted many Big Ten teams, many of which who are ranked in the USTFCCCA coaches' poll.
"I think both teams did some things well and at the same time, some of them showed their inexperience a little bit," Simoneau said. "On the guys' side, I think there's some things in our approach, we could've done a little better in preparation; just making sure we're bringing the right type of energy into the competition."
On the men's side, freshman Brenden Allen was the Spartan top-finisher, clocking in at 25:39.3, good for 39th place. Brayden Law (54th – 26:02.6), Steven Stine (61st – 26:16.1) and Avery Felty (77th – 26:39.4) closed out the Spartan runners in the men's 8k.
"On the women's side, I think the energy was really good so from that perspective, they did a nice job in their approach today," Simoneau added. "I think it helps having Carlyn (Arteaga) there, just as a senior leader, someone who's been there and been in big competitions. I think the younger women benefitted from having her leadership."
In the women's 6k, freshman Katie Osika was the Spartans' top-finisher, placing 35th with a time of 22:00.1.
Stephanie Vanis (22:32.8), Melanie Helder (22:37.5), Karenna Duffey (22:40.3), Kayla Wiitala (22:44.8), Claire Kendell (22:51.2) and Amanda George (23:20.4) rounded out the scoring for the Spartan women. Courtney Krupp (23:29.6), Carlyn Arteaga (23:36.9) and Lidia Clarizio (23:41.6) closed out the MSU runners on the women's side.
