Redshirt-sophomore Hunter Morse makes a career-high seven saves.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a career-high seven saves from redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Morse, the No. 16 Michigan State men's soccer team could not overcome a first-half goal, as No. 13 Washington stopped the Spartans 1-0 Friday night at DeMartin Stadium.
With the loss, the Spartans now stand 0-1-2 this season, while Huskies improve to 3-0-0 this season.
"I thought it was a pretty high-level college soccer game. I thought we started the first five minutes pretty well, but then Washington was very good in the first half. They kind of punched us in the mouth; we made a couple saves, but unfortunately gave up a goal in the last two minutes," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "Again, I think maybe they deserved that. I thought the second half we flipped a switch and, we really went at them and played the way we needed to play in the first half. We were just unfortunate to not get a goal. I thought we created opportunities. It was an entertaining game, and I was okay with the performance in the second half. If we can replicate that for 90 minutes I think we can be alright moving forward." Â
Prior to the game, Michigan State honored the 2018 NCAA College Cup team. The spirited was led by MSU's student group, the Red Cedar Rowdies.
Washington came out hot in the first half, three shots in the first 20 minutes of action. The Spartans weathered the storm and kept the game scoreless. The Huskies found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Lucas Meek scored his first goal of the season off passes from Imanol Rosales and Dylan Teves.
The Spartan offense picked up the pace in the second half. Redshirt-sophomore midfielder Alex Shterenberg continued to show his versatility on both the offensive and defensive ends of the ball. In the 56th minute, his blast was stopped by UW goalkeeper Bryce Logan for one of his three saves on the night.
For the game, Washington out-shot Michigan State, 14-9. The Spartans had seven saves, compared to three by the Huskies. Freshman forward Gianni Ferri started his first career game as MSU played three freshmen on the day in Ferri, Nick Stone and Alaa Algahim.
"The Rowdies were awesome. I'm going to find a way to buy them some pizzas on Sunday out of my own pocket. My wife might not life that but were going to do it. They were incredible from start to finish. It felt like I was in a small European stadium and they were awesome," Rensing said.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, Sept.  8, taking on Cornell as part of a doubleheader with Michigan State  women's team. The MSU women will face Detroit Mercy at 3 p.m.
