Michigan State Women Knocked Off By Purdue 76-66

Four Spartans reach double figures in the loss.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite four players reaching double figures, the injury-plagued Michigan State women's basketball team fell to Purdue, 76-66, at the Breslin Center Thursday night.
Michigan State falls to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten games, having lost three-straight. Purdue has now won three-straight games and improves to 15-7 and 6-4 in league contests.
After the game head coach Suzy Merchant announced that redshirt-junior forward Mardrekia Cook will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles' tendon.
Senior guard Nia Clouden led four Spartans in double-figures with 17 points, marking the sixth game this season with four players in double-digits. Senior guard Taryn McCutcheon added 16 points and at team-high five assists. Freshman guard Moira Joiner scored 12 points, while sophomore forward Kayla Belles added 10 points.
With 16 points, McCutcheon now has 1,111 points, vaulting from No. 24 on MSU's career scoring list up to No. 22, passing former teammate Jenna Allen (2015-19) with 1,098 points and Becky Cummings (1997-2001) with 1,108 points.
Purdue was led by 24 points from Karissa McLaughlin who was 7-for-11 from beyond the arc.
The first five points of the game went to the Spartans before the Boilermakers converted and old-fashioned 3-point play. Behind four early points from Belles Michigan State jumped out to a 12-3 advantage. After starting cold from the field, Purdue began to right the ship and chip away at the MSU lead. After the first 10 minutes, Michigan State was still leading Purdue 15-12.
In the second quarter, the Boilermakers used a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game 20-19. With 6:38 left in the half, Joiner halted the streaks to put the Spartans back on top 21-20. The Boilermakers dominated the period, shooting 69.2 percent from the field. Purdue out-scored Michigan State 24-14 in the second quarter, led by 10 points from Dominique Oden.
Both teams came out hot to start the second half. After a Nia Hollie layup, the Spartans had made three-straight field goals to cut it to a five-point deficit, 47-42. Both teams then went cold with neither team scoring for nearly three minutes. After a Ae'Rianna Harris bucket, Purdue once again took its a double-digit lead 53-42 with under a minute left in the period.
The Boilermakers sustained a double-digit lead for most of the final period. After a pair of McCutcheon free throws cut it to a nine-point lead, 68-59, Purdue took over and kept the advantage in double-figures the rest of the game.
Michigan State will take a break and return to action on Monday, Feb. 3 against No. 17/16 Maryland at 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
Michigan State Notes vs. Purdue
• Michigan State's starting line-up of senior guard Taryn McCutcheon, senior forward Nia Hollie, sophomore forward Kayla Belles, sophomore guard Nia Clouden and freshman guard Moria Joiner, was the seventh-straight game with that starting five for the Spartans, their longest streak of the same starting lineup ... It is MSU's eighth different starting lineup of the season.
• The Spartans had a 32-28 points in the paint edge Thursday night, marking the sixth game this season that MSU had the advantage in the paint, but was the first loss when doing so, now sliding to 5-1.
• MSU also had a 29-26 rebounding advantage, the ninth game this season that the Spartans had more rebounds than the opposition, but also the first loss doing so, now 8-1.
• Michigan State's reserves had an 8-3 bench-scoring advantage over their counterparts, posting the 16th time in 21 games that the Spartan bench out-scored the opposition.
• Clouden led four Spartans in double-figures with 17 points, marking the sixth game this season with four players in double-digits, the second most of the season behind seven games with two players in double-figures.
• Clouden netted her team-leading 10th game that she was the high-point player for MSU ... Clouden has now scored in double-figures in 17 of the 21 games, including the last two ... the sophomore guard was also 7-of-8 at the free throw line, one make shy of her season-high, and tying her high for a Big Ten game.
• McCutcheon was close behind Clouden with 16 points, her second-straight double-digit scoring outing as part of the 15th this season in 21 games played and 53rd of her career ... McCutcheon netted two 3-pointers, her 13th game this season with multiple 3-pointers ... she also shared game-high honors with five assists, dishing out five helpers for the second game in a row, as part of the fifth game this season with five or more helpers.
• With 16 points Thursday, McCutcheon now has 1,111 points, vaulting from No. 24 on MSU's career scoring list up to No. 22, passing former teammate Jenna Allen (2015-19) with 1,098 points and Becky Cummings (1997-2001) with 1,108 points ... McCutcheon is just 42 points shy of the No. 21 spot, held by Julie Polakowski (1982-86) with 1,143 points.
• McCutcheon's five assists gives her 70 for the season and 542 for her career ... the senior guard is now just 33 helpers from breaking the school record of 574 assists, held by her current assistant coach Kristin Haynie (2001-05).
• Joiner netted 12 points for her third double-digit outing in the last four games and fifth of the season, all in the last nine games ... the freshman guard also pulled down four rebounds, as she has snared four or more boards in the last five games.
• Belles rounded out the five Spartans in double-digits with 10 points, her first double-figure scoring game since Jan. 9 at Penn State and first time at home since Dec. 31 vs. Nebraska ... overall, Thursday's 10 points was the seventh game this season that Belles has posted double-digits.
• Belles led MSU with eight rebounds, marking the eighth game this season the sophomore forward led the Green & White on the glass ... the eight boards was the second-straight game with seven or more rebounds and the third in last four games as part of seven times this season.
• The sophomore forward swatted two blocks, marking her sixth game with multiple rejections, including the third in the last five games.
• Hollie swiped a career-high four steals Thursday night, doubling her previous career-best of two swipes, done two previous times this season and 11 other times in her career ... Hollie also snared five rebounds, her second-most in Big Ten play behind a season-best seven at Penn State (Jan. 9).
