EAST LANSING – Drew DeRidder's 30 saves and goals from Mitchell Mattson and Mitchell Lewandowski lifted the Michigan State hockey team past Arizona State, 2-0, on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
A day after playing ASU to a 1-1 tie, the Spartans again carried a 1-0 lead into the third period. Michigan State had 17 shots in the final stanza and Lewandowski's goal with 7:32 to go added some breathing room. After making 14 saves through two periods, DeRidder stopped 16 shots in the third for his first career shutout.
"Drew was outstanding," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "He gave up one goal all weekend and that should be enough. We're really happy for him – he's a battler."
MSU (1-0-1) put 40 shots on goal and killed all four ASU power plays, including, 1:36 of 5-on-3 in the opening period.
"We had talked about getting a little better at some things night over night and I thought a lot of things were (better)," Cole said. "We talked about cleaning up the neutral zone and I thought we did a lot better job there. Our energy throughout until the end of the game was better as well."
Mattson's first career goal proved to be the game winner and came 7:36 into the opening period.
Freshman Kyle Haskins carried the puck through the neutral zone and into the ASU end. As he curled around the right circle, he sent a backhand toward the crease that bounced behind the net. Adam Goodsir followed up, collected the puck and backhanded it into the low slot. Mattson was on the spot and buried the puck down low past goaltender Evan DeBrouwer.
"Goodsir made a good play throwing it out front and they didn't have any defense there and I got and went five-hole," Mattson said. "It was a good one to get out of the way – it felt really good."
The Spartans generated chances all over the ASU zone in the third and it was a play off the rush with 7:32 to go that put them up 2-0.
Kristof Papp carried the puck into the ASU zone down the left side and let go a shot from the circle. DeBrouwer made the initial stop, but the puck bounced out to Lewandowski, who got it, went to his backhand and slid it past the outstretched goaltender while being pushed to the ice.
Michigan State is back in action at Ohio State, Nov. 28-29, in Columbus, Ohio.
