MSU will host five non-conference games before opening a 20-game league schedule.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State women's basketball announced its 2020-21 schedule beginning with an abbreviated five-game non-conference schedule.
Due to the delayed start of the season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spartans will play only five non-conference games, all which will be played at the Breslin Center.
Michigan State will tipoff the season on Friday, Nov. 27 against St. Francis (Pa.) at 3 p.m. This is the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Red Flash.
To open December, MSU will host Detroit on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Last season, the Spartans stopped the Titans, 110-52, in East Lansing. Overall, Michigan State leads the series with Detroit Mercy, 22-7. MSU will then host Central Michigan on Dec. 18. The Spartans haven't faced the Chippewas since an epic 88-87 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019. MSU leads the overall series with CMU, 28-8.
On Dec. 20, Michigan State will take on Northern Illinois for the first time since 2007. The series is currently tied 2-2. The Spartans' final non-conference game will be another in-state rival, taking on Oakland on Dec. 22. MSU holds an overall record of 16-4 against the Golden Grizzlies.
This season, the Big Ten schedule will be increased from 18 to 20 games. The league played 18-game schedules for two years after two seasons of a 16-game docket. The conference played an 18-game league schedule in both 2015-16 and 2014-15.
MSU will open conference play on Dec. 9 at Minnesota, which will be the earliest Big Ten opener since falling to Indiana on Dec. 6, 2009. The Spartans first home Big Ten game will be against Iowa on Dec. 12. Michigan State will play a total of three league contests in December, concluding with a New Year's Eve road battle against Ohio State.
The month of January will see MSU play nine Big Ten games, highlighted by a pair of games against in-state rival Michigan. The Wolverines will host the Spartans on Jan. 18, before MSU returns the favor in East Lansing on Jan. 28.
The Spartans will play four home games in February, while adding three road games. The regular-season finale will be a showdown against Wisconsin at home on either March 5 or 6.
The 2021 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament will be held in Indianapolis for the 24th time, as the event remains at Bankers Life Fieldhouse through 2022. To accommodate the expanded 2020-21 conference schedule, the dates for the 28th Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament have been moved, with the event to be held Tuesday-Saturday, March 9-13, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Big Ten will announce game times at a later date, following the selection of TV games.
Big Ten women's basketball teams will follow the same medical protocols that were developed by the Big Ten Return to Competition Task Force and announced on Sept. 16, 2020. These protocols include daily antigen testing, enhanced cardiac screening and an enhanced data-driven approach when making decisions about practice/competition.
