COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Michigan State hockey team fell for the first time this season, coming up short against No. 10 Ohio State, 4-2, on Sunday night in Columbus. After an overtime win by the Spartans (2-1-1, 1-1 B1G) in the series opener, the two teams played another tight game on Sunday.
OSU (1-3, 1-3 B1G) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on the power play near the midway mark of the third period to go ahead 3-1. The Spartans responded with a goal on the man-advantage two minutes later to pull within one, but an empty-net goal by the Buckeyes with six seconds to play capped the scoring.
Mitchell Mattson and Charlie Combs (power play) both netted their second goals of the season for MSU, which put over 40 shots on goal for the second straight night.
"I thought the guys did a good job," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "One thing that I liked that was consistent was they battled hard tonight put another 44 shots on net. I thought we skated and did some things well, but sometimes it's going to happen that way. They didn't cheat us on the effort and there is a lot to build on."
Ohio State got the only goal of the opening period, as Quinn Preston scored the first of the Buckeyes' two power-play goals on the night, putting in a rebound from near the left circle at the 13:53 mark.
The Spartans were able to even the game just prior to the midway point of the middle stanza as linemates Adam Goodsir and Kyle Haskins combined to set up Mattson. MSU easily broke out of its own zone courtesy of Goodsir taking the puck up ice. Haskins then carried the puck into the OSU zone on the right side, pulled up and spotted Mattson going through the middle. Mattson took the feed, skated further toward the net and ripped a shot into the far corner to make it 1-1.
Ohio State retook the lead, 2-1, with 5:27 to go in the second period. The goal came off an odd-man rush as Joe Dunlap was able to finish with a shot from the right circle.
Grant Gabriele's power-play goal from the right circle at the 10:24 mark made it a 3-1 OSU lead.
Despite the two-goal deficit, the Spartans continued to press the Buckeyes, at one point outshooting them 12-2 in the final stanza.
Combs was able to make it a one-goal game when he put home a rebound from the top of the crease on the power play with 7:30 to play. Mitchell Lewandowski and A.J. Hodges both picked up assists on the goal, which was Combs' second of the series.
MSU ended up with 21 shots in the final period, but couldn't again solve goaltender Tommy Nappier, who ended the game with 42 stops in all.
Spartan goaltender Drew DeRidder finished with 27 saves.
The Spartans went 1-for-4 on the power play, while OSU was 2-for-5.
Michigan State will return to Munn Ice Arena for its next four games, starting this week when it hosts No. 8 Minnesota on Thursday (8 p.m.) and Friday (8 p.m.). Both games will be televised by FOX Sports Detroit and will be available in Canada on TSN.ca.
